My question is about the rev limiter on my Z. When does it kick in ? I know it does no good to hit it but I have not found it by accident either.

It hits around 12K, I found it "again" today after missing 2nd gear. :dunno: :mecry:

I used to get quite a lot of False neutrals between 5th and sixth until i was told to " up-weight" the lever just before pulling in the clutch and found that it worked a treat, no more false's and no more what i can only describe as 2 stage gear changing, going in so far then popping into sixth, hope that helps?

I don't think it is bad to hit the limiter that is why it's there. Don't be scared. I hit the limiter all the time. My bike likes it.

I have never hit the rev limiter on my bike. Guess I'm just a Wuss. Anyhow, I was lucky enough to have gone to Mid Ohio for the races this year and I did hear a tremendous number of people who had no problem reaching their limiters. Almost from the first moment I entered the camp ground I could hear guys pegging the throttle in neutral and holding it. It is a very weird sound and it took a little getting used to but after 24 hrs or so I kinda got to like it.
That place is nuts but really exciting.

However, I have not been able to bring myself to abuse my Z in that manner. I kept thinking that can't be good for the equipment but people kept saying it doesn't hurt it. I have my doubts

If you get the chance to go to Mid Ohio next year, do it. True anarchy is alive and well. The most fun I've had since Woodstock. :woot:

I hit mine constantly when I first switched from the ZX1, but not so much since i have the feel of my bike now. Still, I'd like to bump it up a thousand clicks for fun...As for abusing the engine, rev limiters are there to stop the abuse of revving too high. It really sucks hitting it on a wheelie though, and Im convinced thats the way to crak the frame like in the post about cracked frames. Taught me to shift quicker on one wheel....

I talked to a young guy at the races that made a point I had not thought of. He said hitting the limiter under a load is one thing but hitting it in neutral might be another. Without a load, the RPMs are sure to spike above the designed level before the limiter can back it down. Under those conditions, an insignificant flaw in any part could grenade you engine. Just food for thought.

Revving the engine in nuetral is never a good idea. And what purpose does it serve anyway....? Squid locator?
