How to make 01-03 ZX 9R cams work.

As some of us found out, 01-03 ZX9 R cams cant be used because of the "missing" cam sensor "actuator" on the exhaust cam. Since I had a set of 01's laying around and a couple of spare Z cams I decided to try a conversion. Turns out it was very easy.
when you remove the 6mm screw from the Z's actuator, the "button and pin are loosely set in the end of the cam. The pin can be removed by gently tapping the cam upside down on something soft (wood). Once the pin is out, the button falls right out.
On the 9's cam, you must remove the expansion plug from its end. I just drilled a hole in it and pryed it out.
A hole must be drilled in the 9s cam. The specs are: Drill a #24 hole on the back of the lobe .370" from the end of the cam .900" deep. Go back with a 4mm ream to make the hole smooth and true. Then assemble, thats it. The force of the 6mm screw being tight holds the pin from falling out. Use locktite on the 6mm screw.
I know to most this is useless information, but now we can use 98 to 03 cams instead of just 98 - 99's.:blah:

what do u think the hp increase will be? did u also use zx9 valve springs?
Use ZX-9R's springs and retainers. See MAD-MAX's recent posts for power increases.

What about the 00 ZX9 Cams do they need modifying as well?

MIKE47. I am looking into doing the zx10 injectors and bodies is there anything I should worry about and will an 06 setup work on my 03 Z?
There is a brand new update to the throttlebody mod. First of all the "06" ZX 10R's TBs are the correct ones. What I have found out is that the stock injectors in the 10's TBs is the best combo. The bike just wouldnt act right with the big injectors. PM me if you need help with this mod. As far as the cams are concerned, I dont know about the "00" model. They will work but Im not sure if they have the actuator on them or not. Either way its still simple to do. Again PM me for help.

Thanks Mike!

I appreciate your help. Ill let you know how things go. Another quick Question, do I need the springs and retainers switching to the zx9 cams?
I recommend ZX 9R springs and retainers but some people have done the cams without them. I definitly would if you extend the rpm range. Look at it as cheap insurance.
