How often do you apply lube on your chain? I would look through search.. but honestly I such at using it. I'm just wondering because I have never lubed my chain, I always just let the dealership do it when it gets its oil changed. Should I be lubing it more often? Also...dumb question but what do I lube it with? Sorry this is my first bike.

Every 500 miles or sooner if riding in the rain, dust, etc. Lube with whatever you choose. Some just do WD40, some do chainwax, some do chain lube, some buy an oil dripper

About every 500 for me. I don't really keep watch though. I usually try to clean the dirt off with WD-40 or similar and a brush (just got a grunge brush) and then apply a chain lubricant. I was using Dupont but switched to Liquid Performance after reading a good review and the Dupont formulation change. I only ride in fair weather though so my chain does not really get too bad. You should consider changing the oil yourself also unless the dealer has a good price. It is fairly easy on these bikes.

Most of my day rides are 200 to 350 miles per ride. So I check cold tire air pressure, check/adjust slack & lube the chain before every ride. Have used lots of different lubes. Many lubes fling and make a mess. Found Cyclegear chain lube to work OK without much fling, if allowed to set up on the chain for a couple hours before the ride. Like to apply chain lube with the bike sitting on the rear paddock stand. After applying lube, use a paper towel to clean both sides of the chain while rolling the rear wheel without wiping the lube off of the chain rollers. Don't get your finger caught between the chain & sprocket while doing this. It HURTS! :nono:

When I decide a bike is a "Keeper", buy a factory service manual for normal maintenance and other projects. The manual raises my maintenance IQ and gives additional info for service & other procedures not found in the operators manual. Also get to learn more about motorcycles & save $$$$! :righton:

I usually use the Dupont Teflon ($6 at Walmart).

I lubricate the chain about once a week but if I'm doing big mileage, then it is once a day. Try to lubricate the chain when it is warm e.g. at the end of the ride or in the middle of the ride instead of at the beginning. There are many videos on youtube that shows you the correct way to lubricate a chain.

I've found the little plastic bottles of the same to produce less fling since they changed the formula. For some reason everyone re-engineered their formulas to be more environmentally friendly.

As far as using sand, that's only suggested on Harley's for the belt :)

every 500 miles, even tho i'm also a fair-weather rider. put the bike up on the rear wheel stand, clean with kerosene, lube with maxima chain wax, which is nearly gone; i want to try bel-ray. chain's prob'ly ready for a minor adjustment next time i clean it.

I use a retailer's (Canadian Tire) brand spray oil for motorcycle chains once a week. I spray it on, rotating the chain as I do, and let it sit and drip dry for about 30 minutes, then dry it lightly with a minimally absorbant paper towel or newsprint to remove any fling potential (only when I liberally apply the lube) I used to use SAE80 gear oil years ago but it ALWAYS flung. I've had many people say this and that are better, but I think what's important is that you do lube it, and regularly.

I use my Trip B odometer to keep track of the miles between chain lubes. I try to do it closer to 400 miles, regardless of time, as I don't ride in the wet and my bike is covered most of the time.

I was using BelRey Chain lube, which works well, with minimal fling, but it goes on white, which means I have to wait for it to set up, about 10 minutes, and then wipe it off to show off my gold chain! Wiping off the excess in between each link takes a long time.

Last time I tried Motul's chain lube and it goes on clear, which means you'll have difficulty seeing what link you started spraying it on, so I just squirt a tiny dab of the white stuff to let me know which chain link I started on!
The Motul lube flung off on my tail area and onto my saddlebag on last week's trip, so for touring I'd go with the white stuff from BelRey and just wipe it down a bit after it sets up.

Every other time I clean my chain with Motorex Chain Cleaner. It's a good degreaser and is specifically for motorcycles. After spraying it on and using one of those grunge brushes (get one, as they make the job much easier) I wipe down everything (including the front and rear sprockets) with a towel. Replace the sprocket and chain covers.

I'm still not sure if I should run my bike and warm it up at that point before I apply the lube. Any thoughts?

I'm going to give the Teflon Chain Saver a try, mentioned earlier. I still lube the chain, check slack, check tire PSI, inspect the bike, and clean the bike before each ride. I prefer doing it before the ride and still get 20,000 miles out a chain/sprockets.

From what I've been reading it's optimal to clean/lube the chain while warm after a ride.

The 2012 Ninja 650 operators manual says: "The drive chain slack and lubrication must be checked each day before riding the motorcycle". In the service manual they say if a special lubricant is not available, use SAE90.

Here's a Bel-Ray link about chain lube. They say it's best to lube while the chain is still warm after a ride.

Installed a Scottoiler at 900 miles and 400 miles later the chain is continually well oiled, and very clean. Only drawback is the oil slung onto the underside of the tail but if its nicely waxed it wipes right off.

I use chainwax and wax it every few hundred miles or when ever it begins to look dry. I dont like oil being slung all over my undertail and rearsets so i only use chainwax and it works great.

I don't like the motul lube very much. I used it for 150 miles and the chain was very noisy and picked up a ton of crap from the road. I cleaned it last night with kerosene and put on some of the DuPont wax, quiet as can be now...
