Cost of Going Naked

I'm only a few months into my 2009 Ninja 650r. When I was first looking for a bike, I really wanted a naked bike. When I saw the price on the Ninja (around $4800 OTD), I jumped on it. However, now I'm feeling like I really want a naked bike.

I looked at a Ducati Monster 696. The dealer is crunching numbers because he wants to sell it. If he comes up with something, I may do it, but I don't want to buy a gorgeous new bike I'm likely to drop.

Something else I've considered is converting my 650r into a 650n (ER-6n). I've seen many of you convert your 650r into a naked bike and I like the looks of them. I'm not really mechanically inclined, so is this conversion difficult or expensive? I ask about the ER-6n, because the parts are available and designed to go on this bike, more or less.

It would probably be the same to just trade it in for an ER-6n. I'd like to know my options before I do something impetuous.

Oh come on, the monster is the el-cheapo ducati. What are they like $8k new? I wouldnt worry so much about it. They are quite fun to ride.

To convert your bike to an N would be expensive, because there are hardly any wrecked ones to get the required parts from (headlight and gauges are the big ones). Just go to bikebandit and look at the prices of those parts new....

Good point. They are lighter than the Ninja with a slightly lower seat height. I have only dropped my Ninja once and that was in the first couple of days. I am confident I would be fine with the Monster. Plus, like you said, they're the cheapest one.

Cost is minimal if you really want to go naked.
But if you are wanting to build an N out of a R...
it's true, it will be expensive.
There is just as much plastic, just not as big.
lol

But "naked" is a whole different thing.
Take EVERYTHING off and hook up a 7 in round headlight (or the likes) and you are done.
All you do now is clean up the ugly stuff...
coolant tank, brackets from the things you took off, relocate small electrical items...
so forth and so on.

See it this is what you are thinking about.

The fun of learning is sometimes the art of the build.
And I cant think of a better way to learn.

Another option might be find an old bandit or v twin suzuki.
Parts every where and plenty of help if you look for it.

Good luck. :alcy:

or you could do what I'm in the process of doing, and instead of making a 6n, make something totally your own
And doing a right fine job of it too.
Key words...
"your own"

(even if ya want a fat tire)
:righton:

I'd go naked after a crash and I didn't want to buy new plastics.

Cost of going naked? About the cost of a headlight and some turn signals. Sell your stock fairings and you'll more than likely actually make a profit.
