2006 Z750S Rough Idle at Cold Start

First off, im new here, Hi all. now that thats outta the way.

So ive had my bike for about a month and have it tuned up with new tires put on, it ran fine for a while, but now its got a rough idle on a cold start, once it warms up its fine and runs like a champ. She’s only got 8200 miles (1,000 of those are feom this past month) on her and the lady i bought it from was the first owner, she just didnt have time to ride it consistently anymore so i took it off her hands. BLUF is i wanna clean the fuel delivery system, but I’m not super sure how to go about doing so. A little background on me, I’m a mechanic in the Army and i do most of my own maintenance stuff on my own equipment, BUT this is my first Motorcycle and ill be the first to tell you im pretty ignorant on the two wheeled side of the house. Any help, tips, guidance, or references would be immensely appreciated. Thanks in advance!

There are several fuel injector cleaners on the market that are just added to the tank (eg seafoam, redex), but it's likely that your bike has been sitting for awhile from what you said about the tail end of the previous owners usage so it may be an idea to take the tank off and dump it to make sure you don't have any sediment sitting in the bottom of it first, then add the cleaner to a fresh tank and run it (expect a fair amount of smoke if you use seafoam or redex <-- available in a spray can or bottle, you want the bottle form to put it in the tank) redex is a cleaner/ lubricant normally used for winter storage but it does clean as well. Whatever you use make sure it's for injected not carburated engines. Also if you just got it tuned up check idle speed I've had instances where after the throttle body sync was done that they didn't bother resetting the idle and it was so slow it wouldn't start without the fast idle / choke <--(it's actually a fuel adder) on, if I remember correctly it should idle at 1050 +/- 50 rpm's, the idle screw is a spring loaded thumb screw accessed from the left side of the bike located near the bottom of the left inner throttle body.

Just an added comment if using a cleaner that smokes a lot do it with a minimal amount of fuel in the tank so you don't have it smoking for the whole tank full, that'll just **** off anyone on the road behind you.

Thanks PerryG. I am familiar with Seafoam, i just didnt know if it would be good enough to replace an actual removing of the injectors and cleaning them that way, but ill be sure to try that. The idle seems right, never had an issue starting or running. just sounds a bit rough or off after sitting for a few hours. Ill be sure to re post on here once i pull the tank and clean it out and run the Seafoam through.

    similar problem with running rough

    Hey guys,
I too am new to this forum and I'm kinda having a similar problem I was hoping I could get some opinions on it. I have 2015 z1000, from dealer, power commander, sat for approx 3-4 months or longer. Mine feels like its almost missing in 1-3 gears but levels out at a faster speed, or I don't notice it. Had it for approx 6 months, using 89 or higher grade fuel. Anyway, would appreciate any recommendations from someone in the know.. Also throttle starting sticking yesterday. Anyway, thanks again if you have any thoughts..

Only way to clean an injector is to flow cleaner through it, pulling it out doesn't really help much, all you do is risk a seal failure not to mention it's really tight in there, wouldn't hurt to make sure the plug wire /cdi sticks are all seated properly as well, intermittent spark can cause a rough running engine too and it'll be worse at rpm where the most vibrations occur 4>6k but idle isn't exactly a smooth state either it's actually about to stall almost. There's also the kinked or slightly pinched off fuel line to check for whenever the tank has been taken off, this usually happens at least once to anyone that takes they're tank off a few times
