Can I check the valve clearances myself using a feeler-guage, and determine if valves require shimming? Do I need to pop the camshaft anyhow, to perform this?? It would save a chunk of change, especially if no shimming were required.

I'm not overly familiar with shim under bucket arrangements but I am an at-home mechanic. My goal is to save $$ if I determine that no shims are needed. If they are, then I'll probably yield to a mechanic to take care of that headache. Any advise??

The cams are on top of the buckets...so you check the clearances with the cams in. Gimme you e-mail address (mail it to me direct) and I'll mail you the pages..
