I recently bought the "EGR" block off plates from TPO Parts on Ebay. For those not wanting to read everything, I bought the plates, they didnt fit, I contacted TPO, they gave me a refund and are shipping me the correct plates.

The longer version. I didnt want to mess with the silicone, and I got block off plates for my car, so it seemed like a good idea, although not entirely necessary. I bought the plates, it was shipped to my house fairly quickly, and came with instructions, screws, and rubber stoppers for the carb. Unfortunately, the block off plates were not the right size, although very close. They also lacked a spot for the notch sticking up on the reed valves.

I contacted TPO about the difference, and very quickly I got a response trying to correct the matter. Apparently the specs they had for our bikes are not correct. The rep I talked to said he would get the correct specs and ship them back out to me, meanwhile, I shipped the wrong plates back for a full refund including return shipping.

So far, Im pleased with TPO's customer service. I'll keep it this updated.

Finally got them, and now they are the correct size. Fitting nicely, and looking great. The shop owner Im working at said to leave the reed valves in because it has the gasket that will let it seal better. I could have use some high temp silicon for sealing it, but I just grinded off the notch on the reed valves and put them back in.

I am re using the stock screws, and maybe some washers so that they dont bottom out. I'll get back on that once I get the valve cover gasket, so I can start putting my bike back together. More pics of final product as well.

Finished it all up. I'll take pictures of the block of plates "in action" on the bike. It looks alot better, and reduces weight, and whatever other benefits are associated. :notworthy

+1 for TPO's block off plates. A good buy, and a great little addition to the bike.

What purpose do they serve? What else needs to be "blocked" off when the hoses are no longer needed?

Well, I was led to believe that these block off plates did several things.

They improve exhaust scavenging,
A little weight reduction (couple pounds),
Cleaner, less cluttered, engine area -- Easier to work on
Elimination of potential leaks
Removing the smog system eliminates error when making air/fuel ratio measurements -- A must for dyno tuning, apparently.
And some were complaining about getting oil in their airbox, which these should help.

Other than the block off plates themselves, the only thing you have to block off is the hole in the back of the airbox (Where the valve used to connect to).

When you fitted the TPO block off plates, why didn't you remove the valves underneath as well? Also, how did you go about blocking off the hose outlet on the front of the airbox? I am asking because I have the same block off plates on order.

There is no gasket between the valve cover and block off plate, except for the rubber ring around the reed valves. Figured that would seal better than a silicon gasket.

I blocked off the hose by ghetto rigging a large rubber cap onto a large bolt, and plugged up the airbox hole. You can use other methods, as stated on the ZR-7 site. This is just the method I used, and it has worked.

Unless he is sending you the updated bolts I told him about, then you will have to washer the existing bolts, or buy new ones. But Allan, the guy from TPO that I've been working with, seems very concerned with customer care, so Im sure you will be getting the updated set.

well the problem I have is I bought a 2000 zr7 about a week ago. I thought the bike was solid seeing my neighbor has a dozen or so bikes. After the excitement of getting the bike wore off I started to realize how much this bike has been hacked up. He thought the bike only had two cylinders if that tells you anything. All I know is the bike has a micron pipe. It also had 3 different types of spark plugs in it. So you can see how I have no idea what else has been done to the bike.

Welcome to the Forum!

Getting your bike running right is the best thing to do before looking for aftermarket or upgraded stuff. Since you dont know what has been done to your bike, do it all yourself (Or have a shop do it if you dont have the know-how), so you know what has been done and what has been done right. If you havent been already, www.zr-7.com is a great site for ZR-7 owners, obviously. Most important thing is research on what you want to do, and how to do it.

With an aftermarket pipe, the block off plates will help with the exhaust by scavenging. Basically, The mild vacuum created by the pulse of exhaust gas exiting the exhaust manifold and header pipe will accelerate the air/fuel mixture entering the cylinder. This acceleration effect is called “exhaust scavenging,” and is used to a great effect in naturally aspirated engine designs. The result of this is more efficient use of fuel and optimized engine performance.

After all said and done from the parts mix up. Where did you buy the plates and what is the part number?

Thanks, you had a mixup in part numbers from TPO? I just wanted to confirm the part number, just incase.

You can save a little money just by running a hose between the stock covers so they are connected to each other and it'll accomplish the same thing as the block off plates. The block off plates do look alot better when the tank is off though. But you can't see it when the tank is on.

That's what I have now. Just thought the block of plates were much cleaner.

I had the hose thing, and the block off plates do look cleaner. I'll take pics once the rain is done.

And the parts just werent made correctly for our bikes. Wasnt made off the right schematic. But I talked to the guy at TPO and got everything cleared up.
