Hello everyone. Its much later than usual but lets get started with ROTR17. This would be the 17th year for this event. Its always a good time with a great group of people on some awesome mountain roads through beautiful scenery.

This ride usually takes place starting mid week after Mothers Day and ends the Sunday after Mothers Day.

Anyone is welcome to attend. I can start a poll later if anyone would like different dates and also one for location. We have based our rides out of a few different locations over the years, and recently based from 2 different locations for the ride.

I myself don't know right now if I will make it. I do still have my bike, although I have only ridden about 1600 miles in the last 2 years. I have also gotten slower, and having a CDL need to be careful about the spirited pace that the front of the group keeps. I cant keep up with them ny more but if I can make it would be happy to head up a second group.

Please post up if you're interested and the ROTR veterans can answer any questions you may have.

I'd like to make it. I missed it last year but it is often one of the high points of the year for me. I love being down there in the mountains. Its beautiful and the southern folk are so friendly.

I plan to be there also.
Lets have some ideas for locations and I'll make a poll. We can even split the base location if you guys would like. previous locations have been Hillsville VA, Wytheville VA, Maggie Valley NC, and I guess Erwin TN at last ROTR 16.5.

Fun facts:
The first ROTR was actually based in Danville VA, which was an hour from the mountains. It was started by Tom Bozeman (RIP Tom) and "Fade".
Craig Sr is the only person to have made the spring ride every year since ROTR started in 2001.
We stayed in Boone, NC for ROTR 13.5 I think it was.

ROTR 16.5 really had no base as there were only 3 of us. We stayed in Erwin at the Super 8 for one night which was a good location and inexpensive but Erwin is quite small and there were only a few places to eat. We spent a couple of nights in Murphy, NC.

It would be possible to spend two nights in one location and two in another but sometimes that makes it difficult for some people who are not attending all four days. But again it might help draw some more riders as one of the locations might be close enough that they could join us for a couple of days. I am up for anything, whatever everyone wants to do.
I was looking at my calander and for me the week ending with May 26 (Sat) and 27 (Sun) works better for me. I have a major family thing May 20 so I would not ride the weekend if we do it that week.
How about the week ending May 12 and May 13? I can go any three of those weekends but the weekend of May 26 & 27 is Memorial Day weekend and probably a lot more traffic. The holiday weekend may help attendance as it is a long weekend or it may hurt as people have other plans.

Can you start a poll on those three weekends in May and we will see what kind of response they get.
I've re-arranged plans and am good for the wek following Mother's day so let's go that week.
Sounds great! I just noticed this weekend that I have a doctors apt on 5/25. We will stick with the week following Mothers Day since that is what we have been doing for years and there has been no other input.

Now we just need to decide where to go since it is only 8 weeks away. I guess we have suggestions of Maggie Valley, Boone and Wytheville. Does anyone that is going or planning to go (so far its Ed, Jon & me) have any preferences?
I'm good with all of those sites. We could try Wytheville and do some West Virginia if the salt and sand has washed away. I remeber driving to Snow Shoe and thinking these roads would be nice roads for a motorcycle.

I hope to make it this year.
Hi Michael,

I hope you can make it this year. I think we will be riding the same time as in the past which is the weekend following Mothers Day. Do you have any preferences or recommendations on location?
Only seven more weeks to go. I have a friend from N. GA that hopes to join us this year. He rides a Honda ST1300.

It's looking pretty good for me to make it. I have no preference where we stay.
Only five weeks to go. Looks like we have five riders if my friend joins us. Hopefully Craig and others will join us at the last minute.

I am good with Wytheville but I do not know the roads up there as well. Should we give it one more week for others to chime in?

I think we stayed at the Days Inn one year which had a common parking lot with a German restaurant. I also saw a Sleep Inn and Laquinta nearby. There are plenty of hotels to choose from.
I'm in with Wytheville. Looks like a few restaurants nearby the Days Inn.
nearby restaurants sounds good. It's nice to be able to walk to dinner
Since we are only a month away and there has not been any more response, lets go ahead and make the base Wytheville, VA. We can also make Days Inn the base hotel unless there are any objections. We stayed there before and I think everyone was okay with it. I called there and they said they have plenty of rooms available. The AAA rate for a room with two beds was $272 for the four nights.
I plan on getting to the Days Inn Thursday eve. Looking forward to it. Hope the Craigs and more show up as well.
Hi guys. Looks like Im not going to make it this year again. I was hoping because for many years this ride was one of the high points of my year. I love the beautiful country, amazing roads, and hanging out with friends made over the years. Unfortunately I've had a lot of problems with my house this year that have sucked up all of my money.

Yes we have stayed at the days in there before. If i remember correctly the German place may be the only restaurant within walking distance. There may have been a mexican place that was a fairly long walk, but i seem to remember most places to eat being more towards the center of town.

Some of the routes that Berto an Stan and Serp came up with for that area may be posted in threads from years past. There are some good rides in that area and i'm sure a lot of other good roads too.

Maybe I'll get lucky and win the lottery and get to come down for a couple days. I can dream right?

Anybody want to buy a 66 Mustang?
