sounds like a bad idea to me. stainless steel may do an ok job of filtering some solid contaminants but seems unlikely to catch any water. water in the oil is trapped by the paper in paper filters. water comes mostly from condensation and is one of the most damaging things that gets into your oil on a modern engine.

then again i could be wrong. my air cooled vw's only had a metal screen as a filter and those engines lasted forever :)

Just kiddin, That is some neat info. I always figure, with oil, you just can't do better over all, than keeping it simple. Change it often, don't use additives, always change element with oil. No voodoo needed in this dept.
