Recently got my 2000 ZR7 back on the road after parking due to a back injury. New tires, valve adjustment, rebuilt carbs, oil & filters, all general maintenance. 16k miles. Runs great, still love it. However it is dripping quite a bit of oil from the bottom corner of the air box, about a 6 inch circle. Sits on the side stand most of the time. Emptied the little catch tank already. What can cause this? I checked all the hoses for pinches, but am stumped. Oil level is middle of the marks. Any help is appreciated..
These bikes (ZR7) tend to put out quite a bit of "blow-by/oil mist" into the air box when run at higher RPMs. (especially when the oil level is above the center to full mark in the oil sight glass) That being said, it should be filling up the catch bottle, which should be the only "hole" in the bottom of the air box. Try cleaning the area where it's leaking and check for a crack/hole and fix it with silicone/RTV, also making sure the hole and hose for the catch bottle is clean and not obstructed. Removal of the AIS system may also help. (see ZR7 maintenance & mods page) by reducing the direct introduction of the oil mist into the air box. (Congrats on getting it "back on the road BTW)
Thanks for the good info. This is a great forum. You have done a fantastic job with yours. I Wil start with the AIS removal and sprocket change. Love my bike .... And it's paid for!
mine does it a little if left on the side stand for days, it collects in the corner. park it on the main stand if left for any amount of time, it should then go in to the oil collector and not out the corner of the air box
Good point Shakey I usually park mine on the center stand also, so I've never noticed if our air box has a seam on the bottom that's prone to leakage. Do they? Please let us know what you find when you investigate DaveInc. (Welcome and I appreciate the compliment BTW) It's good to have another ZR owner contribute to the forum. Feel free to post questions and/or pics of your bike also. Virginia is a nice state for riding. Love the mountains there. Be safe.
I have learned to live with this. Can't be bothered cleaning the airbox after every time I ride. I do have a pretty high oil level though just under the max line. I always somehow end up pouring in a bit more oil then I wanted to...
Yep, I know exactly what you mean. I've even pulled the drain plug momentarily, in order to drop a little "excess" oil from the bike while changing oil because of the "delayed action" between adding and when it shows up in the sight glass.
