I have an '05 Concours (bought it new in '05 incidentally) and recently I removed the carburetors. I didn't really do a whole lot to them, just cleaned them up and reassembled. I did replace the float valves and O rings.
Ok so, I put them back on the bike and it idles ok. I can give the throttle a twist, it revs up and settles back to idle... no problem.

But there is a problem. I can twist the throttle 3 or 4 times, no problem. But then when I twist it the revs climb up to about 3 or 3.5 k... and stays there. It will not settle back to idle. If I hit the kill switch and restart it, back to idle. Twist the throttle... 3 k revs and hangs. I also found out kind of accidentally that if I hit the kill switch and back quickly, before the engine stops it will return back to idle and run fine.
So, is this a carburetor issue? Did I do something wrong when I cleaned them up? I'll admit this is a possibility since this is the first time I have ever tried this.

Thanks for any help.

One question, have you tried twisting the throttle back down? Just trying to determine if it's hardware like the throttle cable needing lubed or if possibly the carb boot is letting in extra air. Those are the only 2 possibilities I can think of. Or I'm just all wet from the get-go.

Yeah, actually I had thought of that. I don't think that's the issue though. I did lubricate the throttle cables before I put it all back together. I checked it visually while twisting the throttle and it does look like it's returning like it's supposed to.

The carb boot thing does seem like a possibility, would that be an intermittent thing? If I just hit the kill switch and start it back up without touching a thing and it's idling ok... could this be caused by an air leak?

Not 100% positive there but since you are firing up a cold engine it could be heat related with expansion and contraction when shut down, so in that case yes. Easy way to investigate is to start the bike, leave the throttle alone, then spray carburator cleaner around the boot(s). If the idle rises, there's your issue. Anyway, that's my best shot at it. I would have thought by now that someone more knowledgable would have jumped in to help though. Kinda disappointed there. Sorry about that.
