Hi everyone!

I unfortunately downed my Ninja last week pulling out of a parking lot. Needless to say, I need to replace a few items on the bike but before hand I wanted to get some information before I jumped back onto it.

First a bit of background. I purchased the bike as the third owner, whom did some rather...questionable mods to the bike. The bar ends for example, were glued in, the C clip missing entirely, I had to rewire most of the stuff the person did with the heated grips because the wiring has failed on the throttle side, not to mention the exposed wiring next to the fuel lines. The bike itself is running fine but now with the bike down, I figure now is as good of a time to dig into it and get everything done to it while the weather is crap.

The damage to the bike was a small piece of fairing being broken off, the R&G frame sliding bending back (and broke today when attempting to take it off), the foot peg (which ended up in my boot..foot is fine, just badly bruised) a decent long scratch on the rear plastic and the left tail light needs to be replaced.

I have no idea what the prior owner did or didn't do in terms of maintenance. The bike has 14k miles on it now - I changed all of the fluids and adjusted and lubed the cables and cleaned up the chain.

Does Kawi still make the fairings for the bike? The local dealership I called and asked said they most likely don't (then tried to get me to purchase a 2013 650..)

Are there any mirrors that are longer than the stubby ones? Extensions, anything so I don't have to enjoy staring at my elbows.

I would assume this will help reduce the vibes on the bars. I am not sure if something else should go with those or not however.

Are there any recommendations for footpegs? I'd like to do some touring next summer but again, it's a pretty vibby bike. Anything to ebb some of them at cruising speeds would be awesome.

Lastly, the bike does have an Arrow exhaust. Would it be recommended to get a PCIII or V? I only ask as the bike does seem to run a bit rough when cruising. Sounds good but it gets annoying at certain RPM's

Anything else I should look at for the mileage?

Thanks everyone for the replies and assist!

Hi, welcome to the forum, always great to see new members.

To start download the repair manual:Kawasaki Ninja 650R Service Manuals | Speedzone Direct . For 06-08 (gen 1) owners I also recommend downloading the 09-11 (gen 2) manual. They are very close to being the same but the gen 2 manual has more tips and trouble shooting information that does also pertain to the gen 1 bikes.

Because of the mileage on the bike and it now being winter time/ almost, this would be the perfect time to do the 15k service found in the manual.

Yes Kawasaki does still have the fairing parts available. Dealers do things like that and then wonder why people speak negatively about them! You can find factory parts online cheaper than the dealer anyway. You can also get complete fairing kits on Ebay or here : Motorcycle Fairings - Aftermarket Fairings - Fairing Kit

There are extensions available for the mirrors. I think I saw them at Twisted Throttle or Ninja 650 shop.

Yes bar ends will help with reducing vibrations felt in the handlebars. The one you linked to are ok. There are also one that work from this place: HVMP Motorcycle Bar Ends to Reduce Vibrations or !!!MANIC Salamander Motorcycle Accessories.

Our forum brother Smash has had some info about using Versys footpegs on the ninja, hopefully he'll chime in or you can search for that info.

Yes I do recommend the PCV, The Arrow exhaust tends to lean out the bike a little more than other slip on's. The downside is you will loose fuel mileage. You can check out the PCV FAQ in the performance section for more info on that.

Again welcome to the forum.

Hi and welcome! Always happy to help.

Blue Ridge Performance sells Versys pegs that have been modified to fit. They're awesome and make quite a difference.

I put heavy BBs in my bars, that helped with vibration as well as a layer of tennis grip tape on the grips. I also use a Go Cruise throttle lock that gives my right hand a brake. I like the Vista Cruise too, but I can't use one with my handguards.

I bought mirror extenders from Twisted Throttle. That should've been the FIRST thing I did! Great mod.

Besides fluids, I'd check your air filter. You can clean and oil the oem, its reusable. I didn't bother with my first valve adjustment until 25k, spark plugs at 50k.

For mileage increase, consider going to a 16 tooth sprocket up front. I really like how it changed the bike and gave me a bit of a boost in mpg. I have a review written, but hard to find it via smart phone. Just go to my profile and look at my started threads.

Good luck with the rebuild! If they don't have to be perfect, brand new parts check out eBay. I rebuilt mine that way. Sun Coast Cycles is a great resource.

Thank you both very much for the quick replies, especially the link to the manuals. That will help out tremendously!

Looking at the segment for the handlebars/bar ends, it appears I'll need to order the internal guts, as it is missing from the bike. The internal weight or whatever keeps the nut from falling off is way different than both the manuals show. I am not sure if that is because they switched over to the sport bars or just lost them (shrug)

Blue Ridge has the two fairings and a lot of other goodies I'll have to pick up. My poor credit card is going to hate me. I've been looking at Ebay though, most of the fairings on there are damaged or have some sort of other issue going on.

I'll check out the review and the other things later.

Thanks again! Looking forward to getting it back on the road with the nice weather seemingly returning again.

An alternative to mirror extenders are mirrors from a gen2 bike (09-11). Possibly gen3 will work as well. Some people have used zx14 mirrors but they need a little modification to fit and don't stick out quite as far as the 650r gen2 mirrors.

hey, bmac, welcome to d'forum. I can't offer much advice as I am not a tool-oriented guy. I sure do envy y'all who have mechanical and maintenance skills.

as to an unknown history of a used vehicle - that's why I buy all of my transportation new. sure, I lose through immediate depreciation, but I have peace of mind with out-of-the-box/factory reliability (usually - LOL).

ride lots, post lots.
