Picked up a new helmet today. After all the chit chat about helmets, I had to upgrade. I was using a a HJC-LT12. Went to the shop and chatted with the mechanic who races alot. We disussed what was good and what was bad in helmets. My HJC had a few problems. One, my chin would touch the helmet if I was going over about 80mph or if I tried to push it forward. That was a spooky feeling. It also was not as tight as I would have liked.

Anyhow, I tried on the Shoei RF-800 and RF-900. Did not like either. I could touch the helmet with my chin in both. Then I tried on a Arai something or another. For $600 it really was not worth a flip. So the mechanic suggested I use what the race guys use. An AGV. So I tried on the AGV Q3-Xvent. Man is it Sweet!!!. Tight in all the right places. Can't touch the helmet with my chin no matter what. It's got nice removable liners and pads. Venting is great. I rode for about 60 miles tonight to check it out good. It's awesome. Doesn't move around no matter how fast you are going or how you turn your head. It also came with a cool helmet bag, 5 throw away facecovers, like the pro's use, and some cool stickers. I priced em out around $450 or so. The shop guy wanted to help me out so he cut me a deal. Out the door I was $300. Anyhow, if you are having some of the same problems, you may want to check into this helmet. It totally changed the way I feel while riding. I have much more confidence in my head protection now. Those Italians make a mean helmet.

Cheap sh*t helmets...

Thanks for the good info David. I've got a cheap Fulmer that I've dropped twice and another that I got from BuyKawasaki.com which is color matched, but the trim on the bottom of the helmet is starting to fall off. I'm looking a new helmet, but the Arai and Shoei don't seem to fit well. I'm gonna try the AGV as you suggested. Thanks again, Tom

Your Welcome. I hope you find one you like. It makes a major difference when riding. I know I have learned alot from the people here and I'm just trying to pass on something i've learned along the way.

AGV

Nice choice. I've got 2, a Q3Pro Rossi replica in black and an autographed Q3R Gobert replica in green/purple. Got "The Go Show" to sign it at Road America this summer, and he WON. Had it clearcoated when I got home.

Picked both up from Competition Accessories through their catalog, $175 for the Q3R this spring and $225 for the Q3Pro this fall. Figure I saved about $700 or so. Watch Comp Acc for closeout's in their catalog, they don't have the good deals on the web.

Foggy's choice is my choice

I use a Shark XRX full-face helmet. It is a french make used by four time World Superbike champion Carl Fogarty http://www.shark-helmets.com/. I fits my head like a dream, has a high-tech fiber composite shell and has some nice features such as removable/washable lining and cheek pads in different sizes to match different head shapes. I got in on a sale (last year's model) for 50 bucks (!)

There are drawbacks, e.g. the visor seems to collect mist easily (must be Foggy's fault) and it is a bit noisy. I've heard that the AGVs aren't the most silent helmets either?
