I dunno if anyone who's watching the race noticed, but I saw in the beginning of the race (before they started engines) that Jeff Gordon was wearing an Arai helmet.

I mention it cuz NASCAR's always been a Simpson (and sometimes Bell) kind of sport. Everyone's ditching Simpson products in NASCAR. Nobody else in the racing world uses Simpson stuff. No offence, but their products are pretty crappy. Their helmets were decent, but their protection, foam and construction leave much to be desired. I think Bill Elliot and Gordon started wearing Sparco suits a while back, and Kyle Petty and John Andretti wear OMP suits.

Race team have known for a long time now that Simpson products aren't exactly the highest quality items, but no one really wanted to end their relationship with him because they'd been doing business for so long. With all the controversy over the past year though, teams are now using this "opportunity" to move on to better products.

I dunno, I just thought it was interesting.

Yea, I noticed. You know Simpson is currently suing NASCAR for some big bucks over the Earnhardt seat belt issue last February. Did you happen to notice if Mark Martin had on a helmet other than Simpson or BELL? Tom

Ha Ha, Martin. Since I am a damn diehard fan of the greatest NASCAR driver "never to win a championship" that being Batesville, Arkansas' one and only MARK MARTIN, I have to agree. And I'm happy to say Mark finished ahead of Gordon today. For you folks that don't know diddly about NASCAR racing, Mark Martin pilots his own airplane(s), one being a LearJet, and can bench press more than twice his own weight, albeit he's all of 150 pounds soaking wet and 5' 4 or 5" at best. A really good guy anyway and a good role model for the young ones. Jeff Gordon is a 4 time WC Champ and is very talented, I can't say much else about him, though. And I could go on about other driver's talents, like Rusty Wallace, who is also a licensed jet pilot.... but Martin, Gordon might look better with an ARAI and tights and tutu!! Tom :D

Tom,

No, I didn't notice the helmets of the other drivers. Yeah, Simpson is sueing NASCAR, and although the thought of any lawsuit sickens me, I believe he is justified in doing it. NASCAR pretty much destroyed is career, sanity (not that that old kook was even remotely close to sane, but that's another story; the guy's pretty wacked), and destroyed his business. I really think it was a freak set of circumstances that killed Earnhardt, and I don't think Simpson belts are any worst than most others. I was merely referring to all the other stuff he sells that is nowhere near the quality of the Japanese and Euro brands.

Like suits (did you notice that the new Simpson suits are a copy of the Sparco suit? No coincidence), gloves, shoes, etc. Their helmets are OK, but not great. I've seen cutaways of a top-end Simpson helmet, and the absorbant "foam" (not the inner padding, but the stuff that actually absorbs an impact) doesn't even go all the way down the skull. Think of it as a thick "skull cap" rather than a full protective layer.

I have a Bieffe car helmet, and Simpson gloves and shoes. I bought them when I first went to racing school and didn't know any better. They're pretty beat up already, and I really didn't even drive that much (compared to a real racer). I only did like 7 or 8 races with them, and drove about 15-20 times (think of it like a "Track Day" on a bike) for 45 minutes at a time.

Their shoes are crap. They fall apart too easily, and the outside edge of your right foot (where you brake with the "left side" of it and blip the throttle with the right side of it) wears through in no time. Same with the outer edge of your left foot for clutching. Almost everyone else (Sparco, Alpinestars, OMP, Stand 21, etc.) makes better stuff that's not too much more expensive. And much better quality.

Anyway, I'm glad Ward Burton won the race today. My buddy back home is a HUGE Ward fan.

Emrah, most of us here love to see Ward Burton win just to hear his post race interview!! What a South Boston, VA accent he has, nothing like his bro #99 Roush Racing younger brother, Jeff Burton. Someone once asked why they talked so different, and Ward said "weelll Jefff grewww up on the Noth side of the housse." Great guys they are. Listen to Elliot Sadler when you get a chance, he's from the same area as the Burton brothers. Tom :D

Sadler's a good guy. I've actually hung out with him a little bit (we were town in Kansas City a few days early with the stock car school I was working for, and a bunch of Cup teams were also there testing). It was a few weeks after his first ever win at Bristol. They were staying at our hotel and we ran into them at an Appleby's nearby. Really cool guy. Jeff Burton's pretty neat too. But TINY. You could put him in one pocket, Andretti in the other pocket, and still have room left over for a cell phone and a wallet!

Hey Tom,

Glad to see you're a fan of Mark Martin, too. I grew up not but 40 miles away from Batesville, so it's only natural that I like to see him drive into victory lane. And I'll have to agree with you that I think Gordon wears a pink suit underneath.

Keep the rubber side down.

Pink tights..................Oh yeah well where's Mark Martin's Winston cup trophy at????????????????
Tom it's not nice to let the little green monster out. I'd wear a pink tu-tu too if Brook put it on me..............and so would you. I like Gordo even though he's not a good ole boy from down south. He brings a little manners to NASCAR. ...............No tabacco chewing, nut scratching or get in your face attitude. I also liked the days when the Cale or Dale would climb through a window swinging.
Yeah I'd like to see Martin go to victory lane too but I believe someone would have to give him directions:laugh:

Directions to victory lane  That's a good one Al. Let's see 32 times in WC (along with 41 pole positions) and 45 times (more than anyone else in the Busch series), 4 IROC championships, 4 championships ASA or ARCA. Still, IMHO, and many others, the "best driver never to win a WC championship." And he finished 2nd to EARNHARDT in '89 and 2nd to Gordon in '98. And unlike say Rusty Wallace and some others, he has taken the losses like a man, not a crybaby. BTW, how far is Owensboro, KY from your home? You should be a Mayfield or Waltrip fan, dude. Tom

ps: No one will ever replace the old #3.

Hey isn't Gordon that "Rainbow" guy in NASCAR? Maybe Arai should think twice about who they pay to wear their products.
Just a thought:cool:

What about the tu-tu Tom?............you would still let Brooke put it on you.
I never said Martin didn't win a race.......I was refering to a W/C Championship. Actually he's my second driver. I like his work ethics .......top shape is what he demands. But wasssss up with thai Viagra thing. You would think the name alone would put him out front ................and keep him there.

You all just wait til Greg Biffle gets a solid foot in the Winston Cup door. :D:D

And, Martin is right. Gordon DOES wear pink tights and a tu tu. Why do you think his wife filed for divorce recently?
