:righton: Hey guys and gals i am starting a thread of crashed gear. I am new to biking and have been farely lucky not to "test" any gear yet. I will be buying plenty of gear over the years, but without knowing what works am not sure what to buy. Please add posts of your crashed gear, what worked and what didn't.
Thanks

Joe Rocket Jacket

Here is a picture of Stan's (srogaski) jacket after his off at ROTR6. You can get details about his low-side on that part of the forum. Needless to say, the jacket did it's job, as did his Draggin Jeans! Lucky for him, it could have been much worse!

my friend crashed in a pair of BMW touring pants. It was a BAD crash.
The pants were holding up just fine. There were only two small tears at the knees.
Buying quality gear definitely pays off.

Not to take this thread astray, but where in the I.E. are you located? I just transferred to March ARB this last week end.

Yes, my Joe Rocket jacket held up very well I was quite surprised. It was a 6 year old Joe Rocket Atomic jacket. Also, my back protector worked very well as I landed flat on my back. That was a Dainese Wave protector that replaced the stock JR foam pad.

Our friend who totaled my first 14 was wearing a Vanson mesh jacket. It protected him from a very high speed crash and roll of over 200 feet. If he had had on his Draggin jeans and good boots, he would have faired even better than he did. Kent and I both use Vanson mesh jackets now in the summer heat. He was also wearing a Nolan helmet. It did hold up well in the crash, but since it doesn't fit close in the chin area, it allowed some movement which pushed his sunglasses into his face, fracturing a sinus bone.

I had a HJC helmet that I bounced off the fender of a red ford explorer and it was x-rayed afterwards and is still safe! Can't beat that!

Crash: 1/02/2007 just picked up my second bike, 2005 Yamaha RS Warrior. I was on 95 North in Deerfield cruising at 75 mph when (my girlfriend told me this because she was behind me in her mustang) a big black pick-up truck side swiped me from my blind side. My bike came out from underneath me and I went tumbling down the high at 75 mph. He kept going.

Injuries: Broken Scapula/shoulder blade, shattered right pinky finger, two broken ribs, very minor road rash on small part of lower stomach, and left hand were glove ripped open.

Gear: Shoei RF-1000 helmet. It held up great! The left side were I took the initial impact had a big dent. The rest of the helmet had chunks missing out of it and scrapes. The visor looked like someone dragged the helmet face-first on the pavement. Overall grade A+ no head injury what so ever!!!

SHIFT Avenger SS Waterproof Jacket: Held up great! It looked like it was in a major crash, but held up very well. The only road rash I suffered was because the jacket was to baggy at the bottom and rode up. (my fault for not having a proper fit) Overall grade A+

Shift gloves: (I don't remember the model, but it is the one with the big chrome knuckles. They held up alright, the seem burst on the left glove which left me with some road rash about the size of a silver dollar. No road rash on the rest of my hands. Overall grade D-

Lee Jeans: I was surprised at how well they held up. I had no road rash at all. I did have spots were the heat of the friction melted the fabric to my legs in some spots. Overall Grade D- (The reason for the low score is: you really can't count on regular jeans to protect you from road rash and I can't recommend some one use them for protection)

Dock Martin Boots: Held up great! I still wear them sometimes. They didn't even come close to failing. Only a light scuff mark on the left boot. Overall Grade B (The reason behind this score is there are better motorcycle boots on the market that offer better protection and this isn't a dedicated MC boot)

I hope this is helpful!

I had about a 40mph get low side...wearing a Bieffe helmet, Joe Rocket textile jacket (cant remember the name), AGV leather gloves, Levis, and shoes...
I slid about 40-50 feet before hitting a parked car (lucky for me, or Id have been fine)
I broke my left scapula (shoulder blade), and transverse process on my spine, and pulled a bunch of muscles.

No rash, no marks of any kind. My helmet had a few srcapes where it went under the bumber of the car, if not for it, Id have had a pretty bad headache, and maybe a missing ear. Cheap helmets do work better than nothing, and better than most expect. My gloves had some scrapes on the palms, but no splits, overall an excellent glove, and it was one of the cheaper ones, but did have kevlar stiches on the palm area. My jeans actually had no marks other than dirt, but after a few washings, and a few months down the road, there were some holes develop from what I beleive to be the areas scuffed in the slide. Again, worked better than Id have expected.
Side note here, I had a BEnchmade AFCK clipped in my right pocket, the side I slid on, and it has a momento of the occasion, a part of the handle was beveled, and the clip scratched. My jacket was the worst, the JR patch on the right shoulder (which I still have) was melted, the jacket itself had a few holes through the first layer, but no damage to the foam underneath, the left side outer shoulder was ripped almost off when I went under the car. Otherwise the jacket was fine.
I had the jacket sewn back together and used it for about a year after. I still use the AGV gloves. Got a new helmet shortly after, and I also wear boots now. I still have the jacket, and it would survive another crash just as well, but I switched to a JR Alter Ego for more all weather comfort.

Oh, I guess I should mention, thanks to the a-hole rider (yes another biker caused this) for pulling out in front of me, and then taking off...

My friend low-sided right next to me at about 80MPH. His leather Alpinestars jacket protected his shoulder and back, but his Icon "riding jeans/pants" failed miserably!!! Everywhere they touched the pavement they tore/melted through and into his skin. During the slide, he consciously had to roll off his butt over on to his hip because he felt his flesh being tore away! His upper back had similar contact with the pavement, yet the leather protected him. Additionally, the Icon "jeans" have some kind of nylon or plastic fibers that melted into his abrasions. It hurt him during the crash and then again at the hospital as the doctors removed it! After seeing the incident first hand, I would not recommend Icon (or any other "riding jean") to my worst enemy! To be blunt: THEY SUCK! Wear leather!!!

I've crashed two HJC's and lived to tell about it! I just bought another: AC-12 Carbon Elbowz. http://www.hjchelmets.com/ac12_carbon.htm

I'm a believer in HJC!

I bet the results would have been different if he would have been wearing Draggin Jeans....

There are many products made from synthetics that protect as well or better than leather. I would say that that particular brand/jean may not be good based on your friends incident, but to say they all suck makes no sense...

Yeah, perhaps I over generalized a bit, but just FYI, most tracks discourage or completely disallow synthetics for track days. And if you're racing you HAVE TO wear leather. I'll stick with leather myself...

I had a fairly low speed 'get off' of my '98 Honda VFR 800 while wearing my Aerostich Roadcrafter jacket. I ended up 6 - 7' away from the bike, and somewhat bewildered as I did not know what happened (made a left turn, accelerated and found myself thrown off of the right side). Anyway, I ended up with a chipped helmet, scrapped up hands and a Roadcrafter jacket that still looks new (6 years later). I'm sure that if I had been going fast enough to do some real sliding, the Roadcrafter would show signs of the wreck, but luckily I didn't slide much. Good gear to have though, if you end up getting off of you bike when you really shouldn't.

did you have gloves?

what helmet?

thanks for posting
My helmet was a Shoei RF 800. Like an idiot I wasn't wearing my gloves because I was 'only going a few blocks to the gas station'. I don't do that much anymore, as I have learned my lesson.

When I see guys on their sport bikes wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and sandles I cringe. I just don't have it in me to test the fates that way. I'm too old, and, IMNSHO, too smart for that. Next time I have a get off (which will no doubt happen when I least expect it), I want to have something protecting my pieces parts. And if that does happen again, hopefully there won't be a big a$$ truck following close behind.

I just put in an order for the Aerostich Roadcrafter pants to match my jacket. I might be one of the few guys out there on a cruiser who looks like he's wearing a suitcase, but I don't care because I KNOW that my skin has no love for the road, especially not at highway speeds. :soap:
