cheapo spike intake install / fix

Got the spike intake today, not to bad but it needs a few tweaks to make it work correctly. First as was mentioned in a previous post the outer piece that the filter is on will not fit snug to the mounting plate. The problem is the bolts are not counter sunk enough, counter sinking them will fix this but will also remove the chrome from that area but not a big deal, you can not see that. It is the back hole that needs work the front is fine. Also I will make a gasket for that as well. I will also make a gasket for the plate that bolts to the TB. Actually there will be gaskets for all mating surfaces. The other problem is the filter, it does not seal on the tube, it just sits in the spike cover and moves around ( not good ) so to fix this i put a large rubber vacume cap in the end of the cover, that puts pressure on the filter and now it seals. I will have pics on thursday on the install, i am just mocking it up today. One more thing, if you cut off the air tubes as i did you will have to plug those holes in the plate. They supply rubber caps to put on the tubes, that would work great if the tubes protuded through the plate (not cut ). Also the filter mounting ring is held on with two set screws, that is fine but where the two pieces meet is not sealed, so i will put either an o-ring in it to seal or put a bead of rtv.

just bought this kit. will be selling my other kit cheap. Nothing wrong with the other kit, just like the looks of this one better and think it may flow better.
this kit is a close of the procharger ( i think thats the name) the other is a clone of the thunder. I have the thunder clone but think the one in this link would flow better. ( more direct air into the TB)
this kit is a clone of the forcewinder
So, I got Speedracer's handmedown spike air cleaner installed. Not too hard, looks good and seems to work well. One question...

I now have an extra vacuum tube that used to go into the top of the right air cleaner. Red arrow here. I gather that that's commonly blocked off, or the whole vacuum switch is blocked off with plates to reduce backfiring.

I don't seem to have a backfiring problem, so my question is whether it should be blocked off, or if there's a negative effect of leaving it alone.

yep that is the hose that gets the marble. If you are installing the coasters ( reed valve block off plates ) all of the hoses, valves etc. that is with that system is removed. if you leave that open and still have the reed valves in i would think that would not be good for the engine. That tube was getting filtered air b/4 you put the spike intake on.
That's what I thought, I'll get that plugged asap. I actually wasn't clear on which way the air flowed in that system. I meant to put my hand over it this morning to check, but was in a hurry and forgot.

Thanks.

I am really not to sure how that system worked but i have all that stuff removed from mine. If you don't have the block off plates you can still remove everything and just put rubber caps on the reed box's on each cyl. where the hoses were.
Can someone post step by step instruction on putting this thing on? I just got mine in today.
Curious if Speedracer or one the other MS vets could tell me what the intake temp sensor does ? I have block off plates a so could I remove this or would that have some undesired effects ?

You must keep this intact. It measures the intake air temp and helps with the fuel mixture. A lot of cars have this temp sensor as well. If you unplug it you will get the FI light on.

The metal tube that sticks up out of the crankcase is located top front center of the crankcase in front of the forward cylinder, just to the left side (as you are sitting on the bike) of the reed valve. Some people put a small filter on the crankcase breather hose and mount it closer up under the tank. Google "Vulcan crankcase breather" and you will find a number of discussions and opinions on the subject.

I put my adjustment screw in the slot on a chrome water pump cover.

I went ahead and followed suit and bought the spike intake. I must admit i really like it. It was pretty easy to install. Well at least it was with all the info from everyone. Went on a 100 mile ride Saturday and everything seems to have stayed tight on it. I have the BIG 3 now. WooHoo. lol. Thanks to everyone for all the info on this!! Gotta love this forum!!!

at first i just kept the idle adj where it was and mounted the plate to a bolt on the TB and pushed it through the bracket so you could not see it, now i have it through the mounting hole in the chrome water pump cover. The crank case hose is on the front of the engine below the reed plate.
You guys have been a lot of help installing my eBay spike. I am still having serious issues though with the bike sputtering. It will go to about 3K and I can hear the intake (butterfly) open up and it just dies. The same thing happens if I just open the throttle all the way up, it just takes off then dies, takes off then dies. It's like riding a bull I would imagine. When I installed the spike, I did have to replace the plastic elbow for the air-line as I broke the threads off underneath the cone but I replaced it with a nickel platted brass one that was exactly the same. Could that be causing this issue? I've searched the threads and it seams like a LOT of people are having this issue and usually it has to do with the PCIII grey wire coming un-connected from the yellow/white wire but I soldered mine together right off the bat and also checked the connection yesterday and it is fine. I've tried every map under the sun and I still cannot get this &(*% thing to run correctly. I don't want to have to take the walk of shame and take it to the local bike shop as they really have no clue as to what they're doing and charge you an arm and a leg for not knowing what they're doing! As far as the rest of my set up, I took the stock pipes and cut out the goats blater and fabricated my own pipes, I removed all of the fuel emissions tubing and put block off plates on, the other 2 hoses that were attached to the factory intake are both blocked off at the throttle assembly. I am really praying I don't have a BAD PCIII here. But the issue seems so common - a lot of posts about this issue, there should be some easy resolution I am just not seeing. HELP PLEASE!

Unplug the PCIII at the injectors and plug the factory harness back onto the injectors and do a short test ride. This will tell you if its the PCIII or you need to look at something else.

Sounds very similar problem, like i had my Meanie. That yellow/white wire was broken, first it looks visually ok, but when i pull connection, its snapped off. When it was fixed bike runs great again. Open that connection and make it better connector, side wire for grey wire too.

I checked all of this out today. This is really weird. I drained the tank while I had it off. I was right, there was a decent amount of sludge and crap in the tank so I got all of that out. This is what is puzzling. I filled the tank with just a few ounces of gas - and it died on me about 2 blocks from my house. I filled it up a bit more and it ran like crap all the way to the gas station. Riding like it has been, it will take off and then slow down and then take off. BUT... after I filled the tank it ran great, no issues. So I drove it around forever. The more gas I burn the more and more the issue starts to happen. So the lower the fuel in the tank the more and more this issue starts to happen. At a full tank it runs smoth, no issues. Another thing though is it is backfiring like crazy at de-iddle or right after I let off the throttle. This is the weirdest thing I've ever encountered, I've done the same modifications to both (I've owned 2) mean streaks I've owned and I NEVER had any issues with my first one like this one. The only difference between the two is the spike intake. But I really don't think that is the problem. I am going to HAVE to disconnect the PCIII and try it without, that's about the only thing I haven't tried yet. I did hook it up without the PCIII and ran it for a while but I never took it out for a ride so that's my next step I guess.

Not much help....but maybe it's because your "evilone"....Try changing your name to "sweet one", and see if that helps !!!!! sorry I couldn't help it.
Thanks redflash. LOL, that doesn't help though. Change your name to Barry Allen, IDK. :)

Did you pull the Fuel pump when you had the tank off? I would take the fuel pump out and clean it and the inside of the tank thoroughly, it sounds like you still have sludge in the tank somewhere.
