Friday, I took off on my favorite RTE weekend extravaganza; central Texas BBQ run. I got to bed about two hours later than I wanted to and left 1.5 hours later than I wanted. It's a nine hour haul down there no stops and I like to eat good the first day, so I have a one track mind to get there ASAP.

Holy crap it got hot fast! I was in my Phoenix textile mesh with wicking shirt and shorts and GT Air lid. Stopped for a Powerade to help me. Saw a Connie across the median, two actually; a 14 and a C10 together I think, eastbound on I20. That was the best part of the abbreviated trip. Got just past Shreveport and decided I had had enough. In my mind, I kept telling myself how bored I was, over and over, which was odd because normally I'm fired up when I make this trip.

I turned around and made a three hour stop, rode two hours, a one hour stop, then another hour home. I was beat down and dejected. I know heat can do some crazy things to you, but I was miserable, heart and mind weren't in it. It was all I could do to make it home safely... I probably shouldn't have continued in my condition.

I've decided I still want to go for the BBQ, but I'm taking the cage in the morning. I gotta regroup on my biking. Really disappointed.

Oh yeah, on way back passed a west bound Connie which was even cooler.

Maybe part of the problem was your mind set? (in a hurry) Getting there is supposed to be at least "half the fun" on a motorcycle IMO. Maybe take the trip with a friend? BTW, I've never thought seeing another bike, regardless of what type, was ever "cooler" than riding MY bike.

I have never found blasting down the interstate fun. When I did ride the interstate on the Concours, I found myself north of 90 way more than I should have because I wanted that section of the ride over with as fast as possible.

Having music pumped into the helmet does help, and wearing a hydration pack with WATER really helps if you remember to constantly sip it while riding.

But, when there is a heat advisory out, better off taking the cage.

You made a smart decision. I've felt the same way before, and I'm sure I will again. I agree, park the bike if your not into "it".

I believe a person needs to have a better mindset to ride a motorcycle and be safe. That bike is especially bad for disconnecting a person from the ride. Its fast, and does not really work hard at 70, 80 or 90 and has a way of just muting everything until speeds get way up there.

Just like two wheel said. The bike is so good at that type of road, the rider does not have to work very hard.

If you every have time, find that stretch of road, at night, and see what the bike likes to do, and how it keeps you involved and interested at the top of 4th or 5th gear.

If I am away when this mindset starts, I will do strange things to get back "IN". I have a list of suggested suspension settings. I'll stop, adjust to a new one, and by the time I get home, I better be able to identify the what, when and why of the new setting.

I second hydration. I was out for around 400 miles on Saturday, including a meal break and a stop for water, but still by the time I got home I felt terrible. Was developing a headache and just generally tired. I suspect I wasn't drinking enough, after a while at home and a few glasses of water & gatorade I started feeling better.
