I bought my wife this bike and im wondering if the engine is the same as the 300. Maybe its just choked down to meet the 250 requirements for sale here? I did not find anything online, can someone tell what the difference is. Maybe they put a 250 engine in a 300 body/frame? Thank you

I can't say I've looked at the 2 side by side but I think the frame and body look almost identical. Its just the gauge cluster, displacement and FI that are the major differences. Though I could be wrong. I think the detail on the identification plate or sticker on the frame might be a good place to start. A fair amount of model/production info is in that sticker/numbers.

Im not familiar with tracking the model ID numbers on bikes, where do i look for the information concerning the number i find? i will try and just throw the VN number in google, but not sure what that will bring up

Body and appearance wise the bike are the same, the cluster and hers is FI.

I checked a few sites. As for translating the VINS they tell you what the different fields are supposed to mean but they don't get specific enough to tell what model has FI or not FI. Maybe it came from Canada? No idea if Canada received FI 250's. Also, one site I saw appeared to have a carb to FI conversion kits. So that is a possibility as well.
