You are in San Diego too! Might catch you on a ride sometime. If for whatever reason your deal with DJ doesnt happen, keep me in mind, I will have a bunch of front en parts available soon. I am even in the same city as you!

I re-read the adventure rider thread(first page at least) and it seems the OPs measurements for rotors are incorrect. I am beginning to think that the risers from the 650 will fit into a Z1000 top, and may allow me to recycle the sport bars. Lets see some more pics of the front end, specifically the triples/bars!

He listed them as
03-04 636: 300mm
05-06 636: 320mm

That's actually 20mm too large for both. Oddly, I was looking it up on kawi's website and they list it as a "minimum effective diameter". I've never seen that spec used anywhere else.

05 636: 268mm
03 636: 248mm
06 650: 272mm

The 650 and 05 636 both have 300mm discs but I'm guessing the pad placement is different.

That'd be cool if you could reuse the sport bars. I have one other pic that might be useful.

I'll try and get you diameter and center to center distance for the risers. They're different part numbers from z1000 to 09-11 650 but that could just be related to color.

Thanks. An ebay lister emailed 108mm from his measurements.

EDIT: When you do take that measurement can you also check the thickness of the upper triple? I know I am always asking for measurements but I'm in no rush to get them, still slowly making this project happen

Tell us where you are Kojiiro, before we get lost in the posts. Like what parts do you have together and have you started any work yet?

No work. I will start my own thread when I do start the project. I have the forks, calipers (Nissins, read too many good write ups on why they are better than the Tokicos), axle and spacers, brake lines(might use my 650 lines, I dont like all the joints the Concours lines have) and 08 CBR radial cylinder. Still need a front tire, upper/lower triples and clip ons.

Off topic, went on the usual 94 ride today and damn do those Q3s feel good. It feels so smooth. I dont know how to describe it without sounding overexaggerated but it really makes steering feel different, as if the bike just knows where to go lol. Had no fear of losing grip at all, but then again I dont drag bike or body parts so I am sure I am nowhere near the limit of traction. The tire seems to be really soft, even in the middle, compared to the Roadsmarts. I am not sure what the term is but I am sure you know what I am talkign about, when you ride really hard and fast and it looks like the tire has black dried rubber cement flaking off. I get that on the road smarts in the center if I am going pretty fast on the freeway(80+). On the Q3s it seems even just a casual 65ish through the canyons and that rubber flaking stuff is pretty apparant. I guess thats an indicator that mileage on these will really suck lol.

Hey Kojiiro, how much have you spent so far? Trying to decide whether I want to go this route or just get GVE's and good springs.

$150 for Nissins
$40 08 CBR radial MC
$20 levers (cant reuse old shorties)
$14 caliper bolts ( Nissins didnt have them)
$189 05-06 forks

Edit:

Just FYI, I have springs for my weight in the forks and Intiminators already. I also bought an Ohlins sprung for me. The stock one is suposed to be sprung for me but I will tell you the Ohlins feels amazing compared to both the non adjustable stock one and a Versys adjustable shock.

I went this route cause I want to keep my 650 and not move to a different bike, I wanted better suspension after feeling what the Ohlins did to my rear suspension, I love tinkering, and I felt it would be a fun project.

It WILL cost more than just GVEs. When comparing different suspensions, people shouldnt even mention swapping springs, that should be a given across the board whether you do your rear or front suspension. I hope to recoup some money after doing the swap and selling old parts, springs, intiminators, etc.

Oh and I get good brakes too :) I honestly feel my 500 could brake better than this bike lol. Might just be in my head.

I can't wait to get my rear shock in, and there's no way I won't do something with the front end along with it, but already the swap seems to be just a bit out of my budget.
I hear you on the springs, I would've gotten a pair first thing if I wasn't already doing something this spring.

Looks like I'll be sticking with GVE's and seeing how they feel, but out of curiosity, how much are the triples you're looking at usually? Seeing as they seem to be a rare commodity.

The z1000 triples are currently at $200 for lowers, $100 uppers if you buy in the US and I saw a pair for $220 out of Canada but you dont have to go that route if you can get a welder friend to weld some stops for you. I think it is an expensive upgrade but on the bright side you do recover some money back if you resell the parts you no longer need afterwards.

Regarding the tire, I meant to say I need a new rim since the 650 bearing size is 20mm idx 42mm od where as the axle for the 05 forks are for a 25mm id x 47mm od bearing.

Depending on how early or late I can complete this then yeah I may reuse the tire.
