This is how I adjusted the preload while on the bike. Several people have mentioned removing the shock to adjust it because the adjuster is at the top of the spring.

Take the left side triangle cover off. The remove the 2 bolts for the plastic mount foe the starter relay. That allows you to move all the wires and reach the shock.

I had to use an adjustable spanner wrench. What happens is you can't get it to spin far enough to grab the next spot. So I made the wrench longer/shorter so the handle has room to finish each turn. Overall only takes about 5 minutes this way!
