2003 z1000. I bought it with a LED tidy tail that was already blinking fast because he never used resistors or a new relay. So i went and put LED blinkers up front and got a correct relay.

Was fine for like 2 years. I barely tinker with the thing anymore. I just enjoy it while its in good health. (Tuned, geared, piped, headers, intake, Speigler, etc, 19k miles, etc).

All of the sudden i notice the left blinker light on my dash stays on. So checking i realize the left front blinker is out. Looking closer in the evening, i realize it’s not fully out, but instead incredibly dim. Keep in mind, my front blinker/markers stay on as running lights.

When i turn on the left blinker, it blinks on and off, but is incredibly dim. HOWEVER..... if i use 4 way flashers, it will go to full brightness while it blinks.

Troubleshooting::

I’ve snipped back the lines and re-attached the blinker, no avail. To note: i am only using two wires on each side. The third wire just hangs. I read to only use green to black and yellow to blue and ignored the other one. Playing around though, if i touch the other one to the green/black, it makes the light regular brightness but gets really hot at the wire connection.

Idk what else it could be.. if i bang on the front cowling pretty hard it sometimes will flicker to full bright for a moment. Also, sometimes right when i turn the bike on it will be full brightness, but then dims down to this “low” setting where the light is barely even visible.

I used to be on this forum all the time but kinda stopped modding and just have been enjoying the last couple years. I’ve searched and tinkered with this issue for about a month and no avail. Really stumped and i really don’t want to ride with this not working.

Dealer gives me a “idfk” response... both shops were like “we can look at it but i bet it’s going to be 5+ hours of labor”. I’ll sell it before that.

Pleas electrical guru’s. Lend me your minds.

Any ideas? I’m really stuck. Replaced all the fuses.

Sounds very much like a floating/loose ground wire - or the light *may* be shorted internally. If you have a meter, check to see you have 12V across the the wires to the light.

If you don't, change the ground meter connection to the bike frame and see if you get 12V, hot wire to chassis ground. If you do, the ground wire to the light has a bad connection somewhere.

If you do have a full 12V the LED assembly itself may have gone bad. Inside the light there are wires and circuitry that can go bad.

Thanks for the response. I know a 15 year old bike isn’t exactly a hot topic haha.

They have no ground. Just two wires.

When I hook them up fresh they work correct for 10 seconds until I go to test the blinker and then back to 2% mode. The other night I could get it to momentarily go full bring by banging on the housing, but it stopped doing this before I could pinpoint what component was being sensitive to banging on the front housing.

Going to try to test the light if I can think of another power source I have down here.
