Guys: Damn, Yamaha is in full damage-control mode! The new '06 R6 has a widly optimistic tach and only revs out to 16K, while the '06 Fizzy is getting slammed in it's reviews! Yammie guys, it's time to man the life rafts! ,BK

Doesn't seem that bad to me. They state that it has a few FI issues but also mention that it's a pre-production bike.

I suspect it'll be a super seller at least for a while.

I saw the FZ1 at our local motorcycle show last weekend. Fixed frame mount fairing and a working center stand all on a bike that is now as compact and lithe as our Z's. I'm not going to rush into one but I could easily see myself astride a tuning fork in a season or two from now. A lot would depend on the test ride. One thing the Z has is character that comes through as a slightly rough edge so you know you're commiting "internal combustion" as opposed to an electric motor like feel that I've seen with some other inline 4's. It'll remain to be seen if the new Fizzy has a soul or not.

The Z has been getting it's head bashed in by mag riders for mostly "impressions", rather than concrete issues. The Fizzy has never really struck me as a naked bike, but rather a butt-ugly sport-tourer. Now that they are serious about nakedness, they stumble with fueling issues, flexy frame, and uncooperative suspension. There's a lot of denial flying around the Fizzy board, and all I can say is "welcome to our world"! ,BK

I would still buy on what appeals to me, I dont really worry about some of those little worries of scraping pegs in cornors etc, I dont go any where near that when I go riding, I'm a little old in the tooth for that now, so I mainly go on looks first, being a bit bias to the good old Z.

One word "preproduction". Hopefully these faults will be taken care of before the actual production bikes are delivered.
Although a peaky motor and sub-standard suspension give the Z1000 "character" maybe that's what they should call it on the Yamaha and leave it the way it is.

No thanks I'll keep my 02' FZ1 [email protected] 53 and not take part in the new 06 or the Z1000 . I've had enough of the Z1000 quriks including the vibes and long throttle. So I probably won't be riding a bike with a engine as a stressed member of the frame anytime soon. Carburation works well for me as does my 2 up seat and glove fit with no vibes.. As I remember the FZ1 did quite well on the ridge ride last year.....can't say that for the Z1 for they fear the ride :laugh: talk about absence.

About the most negative thing I read on the FZ1 was last years naked sport comparo in Rider where their test model "burned oil" as they put it.
Other than that, their comments went like this:

"...the clear winner was the Yamaha FZ1. With its cushy seat and reasonable seating position it was the most comfortable, extremely stable in turns, offered the best suspension and absolute pin-your-eyeballs-to-your-face-shield brakes. Now factor in that it has the highest horsepower, delivers decent fuel economy and is priced at $8,599, and what's there to compain about?"

So far the reviews I've seen on the '06 reflect a similar "negativity"...boy am I glad I snapped up my new '05 model discounted to $7599! So far I must concur with the review--it is all those things except one...mine, being properly broken in doesn't burn oil.

Now, a REAL negative does exist...the pre-'06 carb models are rather cold blooded, and a bit finicky about starting until one figures out to crack the throttle a touch, then it starts superbly. This isn't a major issue, and doesn't justify the fix which requires readjusting the float-height...something to do when one gets around to a little performance carb tuning.

The way I see it. the grand old Z has a cult following, I thought I liked a fizzy until I walked around a corner of a garage one night and just about ran into a Black Z1K and I must say I fell in love all over again :wavehand:

Seems to me they just turned the FZ1 into a Z1000. That's why I like the new FZ1. Sat on one at the IMS show it seems a lot smaller than the old one and looks 5X better IMHO. It's a cool update. Hardcore fans of the old ones though aren't likely to rush out and buy one 'cause they might be too radical for their "conservative" tastes. Oh yeah that and the fact the old FZ1 is an awesome all arounder that is reliable as hell. I sometimes ride with a guy who's put 50,000 miles on his in about 3 years and he's had zero problems.
