2004 mean streak with just over 10k miles
Hasn’t been ridden much the last few years because of this issue
First start up of the yr I get a click from the starter. So I put the charger on the battery and still get a click. I bump it in first gear , put it in neutral and it turns over strong and starts.
I take it for a ride , let it idle for a while. Turn it off and it barely turns over.
I put a new battery in it. Still get a click , have to bump it in first gear , put it in neutral again and it starts.

When I put it in first gear , pull in the clutch to start it , it lurches forward like the clutch lever isn’t pulled in. I put put it in neutral and the bike will start.
Same happened to me with my ZR7, albeit with 20,000 (?) km or thereabouts. It was a stuffed starter motor. When I got it out, the brushes and commutator were basically one black carbonised mess. The bumping slightly while in gear I think turns it over a tad to a point where the brushes start working. Solution was (a) first to buy a rebuild kit which wasn't expensive but didn't actually fit and then (b) to get a second-hand starter motor from a wrecker and replace it altogether.
