Hey everyone, so when I go to start my bike it will start up (fuel pump engages, strong turnover) but it will run for 2-3 seconds and die. I've cleaned out the fuel system from pump to injectors, checked my connections on all my sensors, and I even went so far as to make sure I had gas, at least enough to start it. I'm stumped, not sure what would cause it. No codes on my Fi light or anything. Video below.

Following the "KISS" method, it's gotta be fuel, air, or spark. Clearly it's getting all 3 initially and then losing one. Odds are best that it's the fuel pump not delivering enough to keep it running, although it has enough pressure to prime the injectors, which is why it fires but won't stay on. I've never troubleshot a fuel pump but I'm sure there's gotta be resources online on how to do it to confirm.

I thought fuel pumps were just go or no. Didn't think the could lose performance like that. Might be worth me trying though. Might be able to find a way to test the pressure output some how.

Download and take a look at the 'service manual' (as opposed to the 'owner's manual'). You should be able to find it online for free. There's a lot of helpful diagnostic info in there.

I'll take a look at it (service manual). Some more info, I found out my fuel pump is not turning on after priming. Primes when I turn on the bike but wont feed the bike after it starts. If I turn the key on and hold the starter button it will run until the pump stops. I (think/hope) I've narrowed it down the pump relay or ecu. Tip sensor, stand sensor, clutch, and ignition switch are all in working order. Waiting on a fuel pressure tester to get here to test my pumps strength. Not sure what else to do now.

My 2009 650e started dying on
me at the worst times. I’d let sit a coupla minutes, it would fire back up, then lather/rinse/repeat down the road, same day or could be several days before happened again, no rhyme or reason to it. I replaced fuel pump, air filter, spark plugs to no avail. Shop came up empty also. Finally, I remembered a post from some time ago about the tip over sensor. I found one on ebay, installed-problem solved! Good luck-frustrating!

There’d be a tip over sensor bypass test that might help if that’s the case. The manuals are available for free online 😉

Well I have a new tip sensor in route so I'll check that first...but I also have a truck that has the engine sitting in front of it. So the bike is my best transportation and I dont want to wait weeks for parts if the tip sensor isnt the culprit, so I also got an ecu and relay box (all returnable). I'll test all the parts and let you guys know if one works and hopefully help someone else down the road. I was thinking ecu because out of the 15 or so issues that the service manual covers for the dfi system over half of the solutions are to replace the brain.

Well guys I've been riding for 2 hours now and fingers crossed i finally got the ***** goin again. Replaced the damn tip over sensor. I think every bike should come with about 3 extras lol. Seems like such a common issue. Much thanks to those who responded. Really do appreciate it 🤟

This is the problem when you start adding what I call "idiot sensors" that are designed to help, but when they fail, it makes it seem like something much larger and more spendy is the culprit. Glad you got it sorted.
