what are you guys talking about....

they give you a quote based on its vin, not whatever you call it.

the manfacturers model name is the ex650. 650r/er6f is what the bike is marketed it as.
Besides, when was the last time "NINJA" meant anything?

Whatever you do don't don't call your CBR a "HURRICANE", the insurance company will know it's a front line SUPERSPORT! Haha.

Or maybe your insurance company is smart enough to know EX650 = Ninja 650R = ER6F, based on the hundreds, if not thousands of people that have described the bikes as a EX650/Ninja 650R/ER6F then gave them the VIN when they bought the actual policy. A "quote" isn't the same as an actual policy, if I went in and asked my insurance to quote for a KLR650 and then went in and gave them the VIN for my ER6N, the quote would change

My buddy uses State Farm because they only go by the size of the motor, instead of the class of bike. Since all his bikes are Sport bikes he is happy.

I can't use State Farm because 3 of my bikes are over 1600 cc's.

VIN number is what the insurance company wants to create a policy.

and it seems to me progressive cares more for crash rates of a specific bike + year of it.

some higher cc bikes makes no difference in my ratings. i tried to put a 2011 250 under my name and it cost more than if i were to ensure my old 650 and the one i have now

Mine has a VIN. I have no idea where it is on the bike but it has one.

ER6F / 650R / EX650 is all the same bike. There is zero difference. ER6N is naked and has different headlight and front fairing but is otherwise the same. So that question has already been answered so I don't know why it's still coming up.

In regards to insurance, you can call it whatever you want for a quote. Many companies will want a VIN to get a reliable quote and even if the quote you lower once you give the VIN for coverage the rate will go up if it's in their system as something different. But yes, you should avoid using "ninja". My current company I initially got quotes from, then I called again and the second person told me they do not cover any ninja's, then I called again and the person said the same thing and I argued with her until she went and talked to her manager and it turned out she was wrong. However, they will not insure any of the ZX (supersport/proper Ninja) bikes.

My bike is actually listed on my insurance policy as KAWASAKI EX650 NINJA 650R 2009.

Highlighted red is the VIN.

Not that it applies to the Kawaski 650, but the State Farm VIN to model cross reference for my other bike was wrong in my favor. The cross reference had it as a 400cc Burgman scooter when the bike is actually a DRZ400SM. I would think it would be difficult to ride a Burgman like a hooligan. I'm certain that it's difficult NOT to ride the SM like a hooligan.

This is completely incorrect.

Yeah....not true at all. Ex650 is the 650r. Now the 2012 up bikes lost the r. They also lost compression and had some gear changes, fueling map changes, suspension changes, and exhaust changes. Along with a looks redesign.... But it's still the ex650.

All the same. EX650, 650R, ER6F.

Don't know what the "L" would stand for, but a quick search on used bikes through NADA shows the last three digits of the model changed every year. Most likely a way to track the year of the bike, even through they were basically the same from 2012-2016.

2016
EX650EGF Ninja 650
EX650FGF Ninja 650 (ABS)

2015
EX650EFF Ninja 650
EX650FFF Ninja 650 (ABS)

2014
EX650EEF Ninja 650
EX650FEF Ninja 650 (ABS)

2013
EX650EDF Ninja 650R
EX650FDF Ninja 650R (ABS)

2012 (only shows one model listed)
EX650ECF Ninja 650R
