It just clicks when starter button is pressed

I went to start my Zr-7 after doing a lot of work on it these past few months. The battery is brand new, 12.8 on meter, and the bike just clicks when I hit the starter button. With or without the clutch lever depressed it makes the same clicking sound. I have looked for loose connections and cannot find any. Everything seems to be connectedexcept there are two wires coming out of the fuse box that are not connected to anything. One is white with a blue stripe n red dots, the other is black with a yellow stripe n red dots. The are short with female bullet type connections. What are the two wires for?
Not sure what to do next. Any ideas?

It's probably one of 3 things. Bad starter relay..bad starter..or locked up engine. Try tapping the starter with a hammer as you hit the button. If it cranks, then it's a bad starter.

I had exactly this yesterday with my GSX1400. My battery was probably about 4 years old though. It would read 12.81 on the multimeter but the moment the starter was pressed it would drop to about 6 volts and the starter relay click like crazy.

So, you need to test what is happening when you thumb the starter. If the voltage drops, a cell has collapsed in the battery. If the voltage doesn't drop, I would work through earths then look at connections to the relay and starter.

    Cheers, SB

There is at least one female plug / wire by the fuse box that is unused in most of our bikes. I think it's the black with yellow stripe & red dots. That should be the 12v accessory wire & live all the time. On the UK bikes it runs the carb heaters I think. I'll have to check later to see if mine has more than one spare wire.

I will start with the starter. It was off the bike this winter.
    I'll keep you updated.
    Thanks

After you hit the start button, does the headlight illuminate? Will it start with a "jump"?

The headlight does not come on. I never tested the headlight when I bought the bike.
As far as jumping it, I've always been leery of jumping it with a car. I'm thinking it will be bad for the bike's electrical parts.

If you jump it, just use the car battery without the car running.

Never had an issue jumping a bike. And it is possible to get a "bad" brand new battery.

AGM batteries act a lot like Lithium Ion batteries in that when they go bad they just quit. Hook a multi meter to the battery posts then hit the starter button if it drops big time the battery is bad. Also hook the Multi Meter to the starter wires and see if it is getting voltage when the button is pressed. Also check the starter buttons connections.

As an update to my earlier post, there are indeed 2 unused wires in the fuse box area. I've used both mine for accessories.
