Oil Analysis: Texaco Havoline 20W-50 (API SL)

    Lab: Schaeffer's Specialized Lubricants

Engine: 739cc air/oil-cooled four-stroke four-cylinder motorcycle engine with combined transmission and wet clutch.

    Miles on engine: 27,154

    Miles on oil sample: 3000

    Miles on oil filter: 3000

Oil: Texaco Havoline 20W-50 (Current API SL formulation).

Make-up oil added: Approx 5% of total crankcase volume.

Operating conditions: 65F to 100F, mixed high and low speed/RPM, no short trips, moderate idle time

Engine condition/tune: Good overall. Mild knock at startup. Factory jetting, pilot screws 3 turns out (overrich idle). Modified exhaust and airbox, stock air filter element.

What is all this crap? See here: http://theoildrop.server101.com/whatisoilanalysis.htm

    My thoughts:

    1. Considering how ****-poor this stuff made my tranny shift, the numbers look good.

    2. There really is no reason to think that a synthetic is going to add substantially to the engine's life. Between my one test with synthetic, my two with conventionals, and Berto's test with a synthetic, the wear-metal numbers with the synthetics are just not that much better. Synthetics are great oils, but the conventional oils seem to do just fine. Many have noted a shift-quality improvement, and that alone might justify the added cost of a synth.

    3. Of particular note is the viscosity loss of this oil. This test result is the only one of the four where the oil fell out of grade. 15.34cSt is ballpark with the other oils, so it's not like this stuff sheared down to salad-oil levels. But it's still interesting to note that the other oils were all xxW-40. This was a 20W-50 that sheared back to a 40-weight. A cheap conventional 10W-40 might shear down so much that protection suffers and the wear-metal numbers could begin to rise.

Unless I get my hands on another special oil analysis kit deal, this will be the last of my tests for a while. I'm out of kits.

One more thing... If somebody asks me what oil they should use in their ZR-7, my answer will be:

    Oil is good. Use some.
