Presumably you're speaking of the ZR-7. With some more info, some of the real experts here can help. First, we know it's a 10 year old motorcycle. Is it a 10 year old battery? Do you have a voltmeter?

    Sounds like the battery.
Charge the batery and leave overnight. It should still have a 12v charge. If it hasn't its history.

With the engine running put the multimeter across the battery teminals and measure the voltage. It should be about 11.5v raising to 14v by 3000rpm.
Stop the engine and the battery voltage should drop to about 12.5v and stay at that value.

With a toasted battery, if the the bike will run once you've started it then the alternator and rectifier are supplying 12 to 14 volts to the circuit. Even though the battery isn't taking a charge it will be acting as a voltage stabiliser, and preventing the bike from frying the rest of its electrical system.
