    Cracking in tire tread?

I have Pilot Power 2CTs with pressure of 36PSI (tires max says 42 PSI cold) and I noticed while waxing that on the rear tire that there is cracks in the tread of the tire.... The tread is still really good which concerns me. I am about to go on a pretty long ride next month and I am worried that the rear tire will give. Has anyone had this happen to them? The tires themselves are pretty new and don't have many miles on them less than 3000 I would say.

First. Why are you waxing the tire?

Kinda reads that way, but I am just kidding. I had some Metzler tires where the rear tire developed cracks in the rain grooves. I brought it by the dealer and they contacted Metzler and the distributer "rocky tucker" and they warranteed a replacement tire. You might want to contact your dealer and see about warranty.

yeah i forgot the comma in that sentence. I will i didnt buy them from a local dealer i think i bought them from Motorcycle Superstore. I can try and go to the local kawi dealer and see what they say, but as far as them talking to Michelin i dont know if they would do it on my behalf. I could also contact them, michelin, myself to see what they say.

Thanks for your input and next time i will have my wife proof read my threads before i submit them!

The tire is showing a little dry rott. It happens, you will just have to look at the manufactured date that is stamped on the tire. One reason I try to convince people to avoid buying tires from places like that. The reason the deals are so good is the fact that a lot of times they have been sitting in a warehouse for a while and the are just tryng to get rid of them before they become completely unsellable.

FYI I just got a front 2CT from Jakewilson.com and it was dated as of march of this year. What is the 4 digit date code? How long have you had the tire? I Just replaced my front because it was loosing "feel" and was squared off after 3 years and 5K miles. It had some minor cracking along the sidewall.

How much and where is the cracking occurring? If it's a crack(s) running circumfrentialy around the tire it could be where the two rubber compounds are starting to separate. The 2CT is a dual compound tire with a harder center compound for extended life and softer edge compound for added cornering grip.

Instead of specualting, I'll say "PICS!" There are a number of things it could be, and the only way to make an informed guess is to see pics. The location and type of cracking is critical to determining the issue at hand. Could be dry rot, could be fatigue from under-inflation, could be defects, etc.

I now live in a town of 15k people that is 4 miles long. After this year I will get out more, but work's training schedule is taking all of my free time. If I commuted on it all year it would still only get 11k a year. I am NOT riding in -20F!!!!

When I lived in CA I rode it 22k miles the first year i owned it though!

here are a couple pictures of the tire. I had to use my cell and it was getting late so i apologize for the crappy pictures. you can kind of see them. There is alot of those IN the tread portion right around the brown ring on my tire where i have leaned over on turns. What do you guys think is the tire toast?

Those are tears. The Conti guy I spoke to (about hte same thing on my Road Attack front) forwarded my pics to the R&D guys, and the general consensus was stress cracks from underinflation. Despite it being an underinflation issue (read - user error), they still gave me a new front tire and asked that in return I send them my tire once I got the new one.

Try emailing the manufacturer, you might get lucky.

Those are different than what I experienced on my Metzlers. the cracks in mine ran with the rain grooves. A few guys had tread blocks chunk off of their tires.
