What is the "Airbox Mod"?

What is involved in the airbox mod that I have seen referred to?

Haven't done it myself....

..but, believe it refers to removing the rearward facing scoop/snorkle from the airbox lid. There are aftermarket lids available, think they run about $100-$125. My issue with this mod is---I don't mind washing my bike since I prefer it clean. Unless you pull the seat, lift the tank & cover it, water runs right down the tank & into the airbox. Plus, what about the those rare instances where you get caught out in the rain? IMHO, I have found the BMC/K&N air filter provides plenty of air volume.

Airbox mod is the first thing I did to my Z when I got it 2 years ago. I've taken two vacations, rode 20K miles, through some downpours, washed it probably a hundred times and have had no problems whatsoever with water.

I have the photo step-by-step at home. I'll post it when I get there this evening.

The box mod is real easy. You don't cut off the whole snorkle. Underneath that intake 'snorkle' there is a maybe 1.5"hole where the air enters the box. The mod is basically just increasing the size of the hole. The top piece is still in tact and will still shield it from rain/water.
I've done it, and wash my bike weekly when I can. I've checked for water and haven't seen any as of yet.

*edit- beat me to it!

Well, it's not going to breathe any worse.

Because of the airbox position, I don't think you'll hear any difference. And I think some have said it helps. I feel better now that I opened it up.

Once you take a close look at the lid, you'll realize just how restrictive it is. For reference...http://www.riderforums.com/showpost....7&postcount=43

You will definatly hear the difference, but mine is cut all the way open, just enough materal is left to hold the filter in.

I just had my '03Z in to Smither's Customs (local Kaw/Suz tuner/drag racer) for a PCIII and dyno (the install $ was less than the gas I'd burn fetching the PC). Since I shattered my left thumb between when I scheduled the work and the day of, I was unable to do the air-box mod myself, so I described it to Steve (Smithers) asking what he'd heard of it's viability. Told him how to find this thread too. Shortening the story; The a-b mod, the pair-valve mod, PCIII, combined w/ the Muzzy 4-1 system already on it made peak #s of 136.45/71.8 at the wheel. I'm not trying to second-guess anyone, just saying the best tuner in the Mid-West decided it was viable, so do it.

Before anyone else asks; I've been wondering why anyone'd put a system on w/o a PC since I discovered how hot she ran and looked for the box...

Do you mean why anyone would put an exhaust on and not a PCIII?
