crankcase cover, clutch cover, what is it really??

***EDIT*** I am actually replacing the clutch cover, so any information or comments made after 21 APRIL 2009 should be regarding to the clutch cover ***\EDIT***

I appreciate the responses to the original question, but I misunderstood the parts lady at the kawi dealer when she said what part was needed.

Crankcase cover.
Nothing (loose) behind there but a thimble full of oil. There is a O ring that fits into a grove in the cover. Pops right out to install into the new one.
I hope Kawi didn't get to you too bad for a factory one....there is going to be a nice sale on some custom ones real soon

thank you very much. I wish I would have about that sale because I ordered one for $170 through kawi. That hurt a bit. But oh well. I'll worry about more bling later.

Dude...I assume you got that through a dealer..tell them to cancel it..even if it means a restocking charge. You will still come out ahead.
Or have them keep the money and use it towards tires or something else.

ok so i really am a dumbass. the cramkcase cover is the forward most point that i noticed oil on so i assumed it was`that piece that they ordered. I misunderstood them i guess because when i picked up the piece it is the actual clutch cover. I decided to ask her how much the crankcase cover would be just to compare and it was only $24.

You may just need a new gasket and silikon sealer, before you change a cover..............

Some of the things I found when searching mentioned being held on by a magnet. Is this the same thing they were talking about? I'm pretty unfamiliar with engine mechanics but want to stay away from taking it into the kawi dealer for little things that I could do myself.
That cover looks ok, try tighterning the bolts a little bit and see if that solves the problem. if that does not work take of the cover and inspect the 2 matted surfaces for scoring or bad marks.....if there ok clean them up, get a new gasket apply silikon bond and all will be ok. That cover does not undergo many forces, it should be fine

No gasket or sealer on this one. It has a O ring for sealing. Plus there is hardly any oil behind that cover..unless maybe its been on its side for a while...but not in normal operation. Maybe a thimble full at the most.

Unless you've wrecked, I find it highly unlikely that your cover is cracked. Can you physically see a crack? I have a feeling a new o-ring gasket would probably cure your problem. I would of tried that first before ordering a new cover.

Well I'm actually replacing the clutch cover now and I ordered all of the little parts to go inside of it. My question now is:

What is the best way to those bearings for the release shaft into position? That is only problem I'm running into right now. Everything else is going smoothly.

Also if a mod could change the title of this thread to just "Clutch Cover Replacement" or something along those lines, I think it would be better. I'm wondering if I should just take it into the Kawi place and have them hammer them into place, but I don't want to pay labor fees.

uh, oh. As I want tightening the bolts, I accidently over torqued one of them (the one that hold the clutch cable and release in place) and stripped the interior screws. I had applied the blue lock tight on them, but I'm afraid of vibration causing this one to come out still. Is there anything I can do fix this, at least with out replacing the entire clutch housing?
