i chopped my exhaust, wow
So for the 10k mile "bday" i pampered my bike with a few mods. As already posted I swapped the rear shock, and have been doing lots of suspension tuning trying to get it perfect, although it was an upgrade even with poor settings.
While I was adjusting the preload, i took off the left exhaust to make more room and my buddy picked it up, and set it under his ban saw. He has been trying to get me to chop them for 6 months now, well, i had to take the right side off to even them up. Z1000 Exhaust cut short He cut 5.5" off the cans, ended up using a hand grinder for the majority of it, then the ban saw to finish it off. We pulled the packing and the metal liner its attached to out, and removed the two baffles going through the cans, that was a pain in the butt, as one end is flared. A couple pop rivets later and they are back in one piece. btw, those cans are hard to drill through, must have gone through 4 drill bits, all broken, barely scratching the surface. We ended up leaving the two "plates" inside the can, which might be a bad idea. One plate held the two baffles, so its solid with two round holes. The other plate is a mesh screen, on the cat side of that whole packing assembly. I think the plates are causing some turbelence in the cans, but im not sure, it is just really freakin loud. The overall look is much cleaner, and at idle this beast sounds bad. When im cruising along or barely accelerating it is awfully loud. When i crack it open it seems to quiet down a bit, but not much. i can definetly hear the "gurgling" sound from the egr system, pretty sick Last thing was to change the oil, and go for a test ride.

I did the same mod and cut off the same amount you did, I love it as well. Sounds like a monster, almost too loud but after getting all the complements about it i came to the conclusion it was perfect. Great mod.

Too bad Kawasaki didn't build'm that way. Probably one of the best mods you made on you green Z. I'll never regret chop'n my pipes, makes an awesome sound and balances the bike out. Great job cj.

A- Yes
B- I cut the pipes directly in half so I chopped off about 7.5 inches, no end caps C- Probably a couple of pounds, because I hollowed mine out completely D- Mine is louder than any Harley I have heard, it is ridicuously loud, too much to be enjoyable, and I love loud pipes on bikes E- Not sure yet however, my fuel injection light has come on and won't shut off. Here's a link to with sound. Not my bike, but I did the exact same thing as this guy, and the sound over computer speaker doesn't do any justice to how loud the pipes actually are: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LaICnvKP98 Quote:

A- i left the cats in(that would involve cutting the exhaust open then rewelding, and i am going to replace the exhaust this summer anyways) B- kawi emmisions? never saw them, lol, guess i cut/covered them C- 6 lbs 14 ozs D- Yes, it is really loud, D&D on a 750 loud, if i can recall correctly E- not sure yet, on my second tank of gas. it looked like i went from 38mpg to 35mpg, but that could have just been me revving it after cutting the pipes, and letting it idle alot, cuz it sounds so sick my FI light has not come on. when i first cranked it I couldn't believe how loud it was, too loud. then the second ride it sounded better, sounds better everytime i take it out, either im getting used to it, or going deaf, probly a bit of both. listen to my sound clip again, u dont get any of that on a stock z1000 exhaust ![]()

I think the easiest thing to compare as to how it sounds open header versus with the pipes.
If you've never taken the 3-5 minutes to take your pipes off and hear what this engine sounds like on the headers, do yourself a favor and let it growl and scream. It sounds brutal! I still have my stock pipes, and I wouldn't mind shortening them. However, I don't like the stock endcaps, and I think I'll be chopping the tips at an angle if/when I do (if I don't just sell them, they'll make great frame sliders for the track ). Is the pipe the same diameter the whole way through as the stock exit tips? |

chopped my exhaust,wow
Rode the end of season without the end caps wow what a difference. Winter is here looking for a place to make new end caps. It is so loud that alarms go off when end caps are off the bike.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LaICnvKP98 Like my pm I have not had any problems at all no lights on thinking about getting a 12 inch drill and drilling the cats this season. Good luck with the mods |

Yay! No decrease in fuel economy, checked it this morning, 38.9mpg, just about average for my riding Casinoman: So you removed the fiberglass packing as well as the tube that it wraps around? sounds smoother than mine, wasn't sure if that was an end cap issue or packing.

Just wondered how to exactly do this modification. I know you explained it a little, but still kind a not too sure. Is there a diagram of the inner pipe so we can see what we'll be dealing with. I like the new look, but I don't think I would do the mod if it enevitably because sooo loud. Any way to keep them somehow acceptable loud!
need more info, thkx |
