Question Oil Filter #

Does anybody know the reference number for the oil filter? The number like the ones for cars. I have 2 bikes that use the same filter, and I do not want to spend $6-$7 a piece for one from the dealer. I have seen the general cross reference before, but at the time it looked unfamiliar with what stores use.

WalMart SuperTech ST7317 is the cheapest one I know of that I would use
Purolator Pure One PL14610. This one is the long one at 3 1/4 inches long and is sold at advance auto
Purolator Pure One PL14612 This is the short one at 2 1/2 also sold at advance. I had to start using this one when I put my Hotbox on.

Been using the Purolator Pure One PL14610 on both my Vulcan 750 and Meanstreak for years, no complaints. Some people care because they are blue instead of black, doesn't bother me.

Just my opinion, but I'd fork out the $6 - $7 dollars for the Kawasaki filter rather then have to have my engine rebuilt because some cheap filter couldn't do the job.

Listen to Stuweicker. Use stock Only. The stock filter is made to work with our bikes oil pressure and a universal car oil filter is not. I spent $1158 to find this out the hard way when a bunch of my lifters went Kaput!

I've been using them for years on both my 1600 MS and old 1500 Classic FI with ZERO issues. The automotive application are for Subaru's. They can easily handle kawasaki m/c oil pressure...

That's one helluva misinformed conclusion, my friend. If the oil pressure were too great for the filter it would open the filter bypass and simply flow unfiltered oil through the system until it settled back down, but I doubt our engines are running higher oil pressure than a much larger automobile engine with much more damand. Your failure could have been due to the recall that affected '02 and '03 models forcing them to a canister type filter due to startup oil pressure surges that were rupturing spin-on filters. Either way, however, I would imagine between the oil covered rear tire and the low-oil indicator I'd have the engine shut down long before ruining the valve train.

It's not about them being able to handle Our oil pressure. Automotive filters are made to handle the higher oil pressure of large engines but Motorcycles don't put out that kind of pressure - in my opinion, this fact keeps our engines from getting all the oil that they need.

I believe if you research the bypass pressures on both the factory filter and the ones mentioned above you will find they are the same and that's what is most important to saving an engine when the element gets filled up. An incorrect bypass pressure will either not let enough oil pressure stay in the lines or too little pressure will let too much unfiltered oil back into the system.
