I've got a trip planned to North East Ohio in the first week in June. My buddy and I will be riding from Lexington, KY to Dayton, OH (visit my sister) and then up to Geneva, OH. to visit more family. I'm looking for some communication devices for the trip. I've looked at Chatter Box and some others that I've seen posted and then I ran across -
MotoComm SideKick SK-55 for $139.00 it includes the radio with 22 Channels and 10 miles of range of course that is under ideal conditions. Anyways it's a
Midland Radio - weatherproof
Speaker / Microphone headset for helmet
all the wires with a push to talk weatherproof button that can be attached to the handlebar and a 2nd switch that can be attached to your finger.
Is anyone out there familiar with Motocom and this particular model? At least you would be able to use the radio for more then just on the bike unlike the Chatter Box and the price isn't bad either.
Welcom all feed back. Here is the link for anyone to read up on it.
Thanks in advance.
Ben
There will NOT be any snow in June!!! Perhaps Nelson and I can ride down and have lunch with you or something; I'll have to look at a map. I fear that I only have a rider to passenger communication system. I sold the KLR to a fellow down your way just outside of Atlanta!
OH! The Motocomm looks nice; Midland has a good reputation where I come from.
Ben, I have a Motocomm headset/mic/PTT switch set-up for my CB. They don't appear to my eye to be quite as sturdy as some others, but they've worked fine for me so far (it's been about 10 months) and they don't cost as much.
Doug - Thanks for the info. I have thought about the whole set up or the Headset/Mic/PTT set up. I've already got a set of Audiovox 2 way radios that are weatherproof as well. Just not sure if they fit the set up from Motocomm. I have also written Motocomm for more info. Believe it or not they wrote back last night. Now that's quick customer service.
Ed- Shoot me an e-mail at work and I'll tell you our plans / schedule.
Well I finally recieved my Motocom Headset. I ended going with the MC-551 Helmet Headset for $59.99 each and I bought the Midland GXT-325 X-TRA Talk water resistant radios. As a quick test I was able to get reception for 5 miles away with interferance of trees and hilly terrain so I'm sure being on the bike on the interstate and being with in a couple hundred feet on another person should work just fine. The headset works great inside of my Arai Helmet. I've posted a couple of pix. of the set up.
The radios were $45.99 at Office Depot and that includes the $10 rebate.
The set also includes a push to talk button that is velcroed to the left hand grip.
Here is a close up of the "Push to Talk" button that will be attached to the left handgrip. Total price for the two radios and Helmet Headsets was about $170. Not bad compared to the Chatterbox.
Looks like a nice unit. Will you put the actual radio in a jacket pocket or somewhere on the bike? How do you run the line from the handlebar unit to the radio?
Ben,
This setup looks ideal... I will have to look into it before Nelson and I head your way sometime this summer. I am picking up your Ohio maps today and I'll send em off on Monday; we have snow here in Michigan this weekend... crap.
I will try to get a picture on the "Push to Talk" button on the Left Hand Grip in the next day or So.
I will either have the radio in my Darien Jacket pocket or cipped to my pants but most likey in my jacket. It weather proof so that should help from the rain.
Ed,
Not bad here but were supposed to get a heavy freeze at the house and maybe 2" of snow in the mountains. Boy I'm glad I don't live in Detroit Thanks for the maps and don't forget to have Nelson check out the www.killboy.com website and get him on the forums his bike would fit right in.
