2007 MV Augusta F4 1000r
My neighbor works for an insurance company and they bought one of these at a police auction. It had been stolen/dropped/recovered - not sure of the whole story, but they have it and will be using it as a bait bike, but it wouldn't start. So they asked me to come over and take a look at it. Dead battery, jump start, click, click (even on a running car's battery), so I figure it was dropped maybe something's loose, so I start pressing electrical relays and whatnots tightly into their sockets, and lo and behold it fired up! I told them, of course, if the battery has any chance to hold a charge the bike should be ridden around for about 30 minutes to see if it can take a charge. Since I was only one there that knew how to ride a motorcycle I volunteered.
Going gently at first, nothing wobbled, brakes solid, no noises (except that delicious exhaust note). Gradually stepped up the pace, O.M.G! I've never ridden a $24,000 motorcycle before, but it was everything I imagined it would be! Light, agile, fast as balls!
So after a 20 minutes or so I bring it home, nothing on the battery, dead as Elvis. Won't restart. Voltage goes from 11.4 to 5.2 when you turn the key to PWN I mean ON. I pulled the battery out and they they are gonna buy a new battery today and I'll put it in when it gets here. I spent the evening cleaning it up. It had been abused by the police and auction house with some kind of white writing and police stickers (the kind you're not supposed to get off easily), so I cleaned her up, took some pictures (at home on the camera, srry) and left her in my garage next to my ZR-7. I hate to think it'll be used as a bait bike, probably dropped again (or worse). Maybe when they are done with it (if it survives) they'll donate it to the PJGeorge Shelter for Abused Exotic Motorcycles.

Jumping a motorcycle off a running car is a big no no. You probably fried the wiring and the regulator/rectifier, this is why it wouldn't hold a charge or restart after the ride I assume. I am also speaking from experience, I did this once to an old bike not knowing any better and had to completely replace the wiring harness and the reg/rect. Never ever use a running car to jump a bike...

Umm, Ok, that's a scary statement. If I fried anything, how was it running at all once I started it? I can see frying the battery, but I think the battery was already toast from sitting for so long in the impound yard. I'll have to reserve any judgement until the new battery comes. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

After I did this to one of my bikes, it ran fine for a bit, but any time I would try and ride it more than a few miles, it would die on me and I would end up stranded. I hope you didn't mess anything up to bad, but if you put a new battery in it and it keeps dying then I would assume you screwed the regulator/rectifier. Good luck! FYI, if you ever jump another bike off a car, never start the car....only do it with the key turned on, but not started.

Offer to trade your zr-7 for the mv augusta to use as the bait bike instead
At least the zr-7 runs perfectly (at least after you fixed the starter)

Jumping from a car as long as its turned off is fine. I have done it before and if you do a search many others have as well with no consequence.

Ok, got the new battery and after patching the fuel pump relay, which the previous scumbag owner had cut for some reason and did a crappy job of taping up, it fired up and purred beautifully. I'm gonna ride it again later tonight to see how it's working.
I am gonna see what they do with these bikes after they are bait bikes, maybe I could make it a track bike if it cannot be retitled.

I'm pretty sure I pointed out the fact that as long as the car is not running it should be ok... he clearly stated in the first post "(even on a running cars battery)"....so yea...If I were you I would stay close to home and ride it for a while to see if the battery is going to die on you due to your regulator/rectifier and or wiring being shot. Hope all is well.

Well, one thing I can do is connect a multimeter and watch the voltage when the bike's running. A good alternator and reg/rec will keep the voltage to 13.5 - 14.5 volts. If the regulator is shot the multimeter would probably show way over 14.5 volts because it could no longer dump the extra current to ground. If the rectifier is shot the bike won't charge the battery at all (can't convert the alternator's ac current to dc). If the alt is shot same, no charging at all.
But hell, what do I care, it's going be stolen (several times), probably crashed and totaled too anyway.
Eh, just the same I'll take a look see.
