Powering USB devices on the bike

So ive been searching for something to charge my phone, didn't want to install a 12v socket go the large plug route.

Just got one of these, it converts 12v DC to 5v DC and has a female USB plug ready to mount. So now i can charge anything via usb from my battery while im out and about. Really nice for long trips

Nice. I hope you put a fuse on the + line.

I decided to go the cigarette adapter route recently, and ordered this unit to mount under the seat. It's weather sealed and will work better at providing power, for my Replay XD1080 cameras. I figured that I would just use a USB charger adapter (I've got three) on the occasions I need direct USB power: Adapter to convert SAE to Dual Cigarette Socket - BC.POW.00.010.1000 : TwistedThrottle.com

This item is also weather sealed, so I would use it in preference to the one you posted: TAPP LITE USB Charger - 3BR.150.0034.01 : TwistedThrottle.com

thanks, i looked at that product, they are just marking up the price. got the same exact thing. and im putting it all under the rear seat, and adding a waterproof female extension up to the front. This way I can unplug it near the battery and connect stuff there or use the upfront power connection as i have my phone mounted to my bars.

I've used cheap, Walmart cig lighter plugs for almost 75,000 miles. Mount 'em right out there on the fairing. Never a problem. I use a cig lighter --> USB adapter.

The above options are clearly much nicer than mine, just posting up what's worked for me.

Wow, nice option, now I dunno if I wanna do that or the waterproof cig socket. I'm gonna mostly use it for phone charging and GPS, and they both have USB cords. Any heated vests run off USB yet?

No, no heated vests. The USB ports only typically output something like one Amp max, at 5 Volts, so it's not practical. One of the reasons I'm installing a hidden twin cigarette socket.

Actually, I just remembered you can get 12v microusb chargers with a usb port built in too, so you could even run 2 devices. That might be a better option for me.

I find it much easier to just charge the phone, mP3 player or GPS at home, or the hotel.

Do smart phones burn through power that fast? I'm on a vintage clam-shell dumb phone.

Well, it one device acting as phone, mp3 player, GPS, news device and weather station. So uses an equivalent amount of power. The battery is good, but gps in particular uses a lot of power.

Dang, that did come out looking pretty good. I need to get something worked out to charge my phone or even this Duracell battery thing that I bought to charge things off of as well.
