Cool Is the rear light above the license a legal must have?

In the US, is the little light above the license plate mandatory to keep? If I can loose the light, and still be legal, it opens up a lot of options for fender elimination. If this is state mandated - I live in Minnesota.

    Thanks in advance,

In Texas it is a legal must, but I doubt that it is enforced.
License plates here are supposed to be seen in the dark.

This may answer other's questions. But I did some searches. Minnesota publishes a "Minnesota Motorcycle Manual" in pdf form online. I searched on this, and I did NOT find anything about a license plate light. I found stuff on headlights, brake lights, but not about license plate lights. So unless I hear differently, it looks to me like it is NOT mandatory in Minnesota.

    NO.
The tail light shines on the license plate sufficiently. The color shining on the plate is unimportant as long as it's a legal color. Red is fine. Worse comes to worse, you could drill a hole at the bottom of your taillight and let the white bulb shine on it.

I've had a couple of other bikes that use the taillight as a plate light (oem). My Suzuki GS450 and my Kawasaki G3SS.

It going to depend on the cop that pulls you over for not having a license plate light...... basically if the vehicle came from the factory with one and it's not there or not working then that is basis to pull you over.

If your tail light has a clear section in it for the license plate then that's sufficient (and it actually shines on the plate), but if it has a seperate light all together then, to be legal, you should have one. With all the LED options that are out there now, it shouldn't take a whole lot to drop in a light or 2 to accomodate what you want to do.

Having a license plate light may be a Federal law and may not be listed in your state laws.

    Bio,

I'm in Robbinsdale, which is a small town just on the north side of the Minneapolis Metro.

It going to depend on the cop that pulls you over for not having a license plate light...... basically if the vehicle came from the factory with one and it's not there or not working then that is basis to pull you over.
You know I did some quick measuring. I can loose the light, cut the plastic basicially parallel with the two plastic stems that hold the stock turn signals, and mount the little license bracket, and license right in between the two turn signals. There is like a flat piece of plastic right there, that flattens out at about a 45 degree angle (you would have to look at the thinkg to know what I am talking about) - any way I can mount the licesne off of those two flat pieces. Its almost like they were made for that purpose. I think it would be just perfect. Don't have to buy any kits or brakets or anyting.

I'll post it if it turns out nice.

ps - Sonny. Nice to hear from you. You race aginst the SV650's - right? How's it going?

Oh no, that's not me, I wish it was though! Closest I ever got was racing mini bikes a few years back.
Martin, You are right, they can get for just about anything, but prudence would lead me to believe that if the plate is lit, for the purpose of night legibility, then it should be legal.

It's just one of those stupid little things that leaves a rider open to getting pulled over. There are cops that really "have it out" for motorcycles and will look for that one little thing to pull 'em over and then, once they got the rider off his bike and the ticket book's out, it's a free for all.

What about those licence bolts that have lights built into them? Now there's an option. I wish I could just click my heals and someone will post a link to a set of those bolts with heads that are chrome skulls looking backward with glowing red eyes and a clear lens at the base illuminating the plate

This one's pretty cool...it's like a fluorescent light for your plate. It's integrated into a plate frame.

They have the light 'n bolts too, but I question their legality...
