Exclamation Engine knock is NOT normal!!

My (purchased used) 02 mean streak with 15000 miles has had a noticable engine knock since I took off the loud pipes when I got it just a month ago. Everybody seems to think this knock is normal for the Vulcan engine. After about 400 miles of listening to the abnormal knock I decided this weekend im going to find out if its normal. The engine is out and its comming apart! With the top end off to the cams I have already found something that could have destroyed the engine!! The KACR unit on the rear cam is falling apart! The limiting pin that stops the weights from flying out too far is almost torn out. You can see where the pin head has been hitting the rocker. I'm going down farther but i'm waiting on the tool to get out the sleeves around the spark plugs to get the heads and cylinders off. I want to check the bore size for piston slap. I'll keep you posted....

Got the bores off this evening and just as I thought the front cylinder has lots of piston scuffing on the front and rear face. The rear cylinder has some scuffing on the rear side only? Bores look like there is some wear but I don't have a bore mic and I cant get them measured till monday at the machinest. Kinda shocked at the amount of carbon builup on top of the pistons, seems excessive for an injected motor?? Previous owner could have run junk gas which could had caused the detonation that scuffed the bores? Either way looks like a rebore and new pistons and KACR units for the cams!

Now's the time to do the Muzzy pistons/Webb cams. Will cost less than stock parts too...

I seen that but i'm not real hip on upping the compression. Does anybody else make pistons for this bike??

    Bored out of round!!

Got the bores checked this morning and they are out of round! The front front bore is out by almost .005 and the rear is just .002 so I ordered the oversize pistons and rings with all gaskets and seals come to just a tick over $500.00 not bad! This includes both front and rear KACR unit for the cams...

Well at least do a little port work on those heads while you've got it out. It is against the law to repair without upgrading.

My meanie is in the shop now for loud knocks. I did the same thing with the pipes to discover the noise. But, mine is from the bottom end. I was told it was a spun rod bearing. Hope yours (02 streaker) heals well!

Man, you guys are making me paranoid. Anytime I hear some clacking, I'm going to assume the worst. My bike only has 2k on it, but it does clack, especially on startup, which I'm sure is normal from the oil not being sloshed around yet. I guess there are so many different types of engine noises, you must discern which ones are 'normal' and which ones aren't.

That sucks on the rod bearings! That will cost you more than me. I can at least do my own labor as I use to work for a kaw dealer years ago. Since thay have yours down tell them to check your bores and those KACR units!! Good luck...

I took the front KACR off, just using the rear one.

I wondered what would happen with them both off? Mine are so sloppy I don't think they were doing anything anyway. But I ordered two new ones just the same, dealer said they have been updated to a newer style but he didnt know why. Guess i'll find out?... Kaw discontinued the .020 over pistons and changed to a .050 over size which could be the 1600 standard piston? What is the bore size on the 1600???

.020 over pistons for a metric bike are usually .020 inches, 0.50 mm. In the parts book, the OS will be .25mm or .50mm, etc.

Kawasaki offers STD and 0.50mm OS for the 1500 MS.

1500 and 1600 pistons are the same diameter.

Mid 80's Evo Harleys had weak starters, we'd rewire the kill switch so you you could spin the motor on the starter with the kill switch off and after it started turning over flip the kill switch on and it would fire up. It's a trick that's an alternative to compression releases.

Kawasaki don't have any pistons available in the US oversize for the streak! Looks like they will be comming from japan. Guess I won't be doing any more riding this year!!!

Good excuse for a big bore kit and cams.
