    Looking for bigger/different backrest....

    Hallo all,

Well, I have a question and need some advise and help.
I currently have a mini sissy bar (see pic) which is perfect if you use the stock seat with the Meanie. But since my bike came with the two piece Mustang Touring seat and it is a lot more comfortable than the stock I want to use it. But the mini is just too mini when used with that seat (again see pic). Now there are two options that I can try to choose between and I need help from you guys to decide what the best/easiest option is.

    First option:
Try to trade the mini bar that I have for a larger/higher bar with someone that has the higher one and is looking for the mini (Anyone out there that is willing to do this.....?). Problem with this is that there is a chance (large one....) there's no-one out there to do that. And the current sissy bar mount is permanent and I am also looking for something detachable if possible (anyone know of one that is?).

    Second option:
Keep using the current mount and bracket and try to fabricate a larger/higher pad myself using the bar and mounting hardware. In this case what is the way to do this? Piece of MDF, some foam and (real or fake) leather to cover it? But how put that together and then get the cover on it? Anyone done this before? Please share..... Still not detachable though.....

I could of course try to sell my mini bar and buy a larger detachable one.... but I want to explore the before options first.

Image of the sissy bar with the Mustang seat (the red on is obviously mine....):

Anyway, thnx for any input offered.

    Eric.

I really liked my Custom world sissy bar and luggage rack. But it was not detachable. It matched the Mustang really well.

    backrest

Take a look at the HD backrest I put on my MS in this forum under backrest interchange. I can use the small grab bar or slip in the taller backrest with a pad. HD (what a dirty word) luggage rack will bolt right on the brackets if I need one.

I have not seen or hear of a detachable backrest but you might try the Jardine short billet backrest. I have a pic on the thread below I took several years ago before I started adding other items. I actually use the taller Jaredine now and I get complaments on how it looks all the time. The back pad is thick enough that it does push the passenger forward a little not leaving enough room to use my mustang backrest....... but with the right passenger, that can be an advantage in itself.

Grab some 3/8X3/4 bar stock and bend yourself a back rest. Use your mini backrest as a guide to the leg angles and the pad placement, little spray paint and bingo...backrest made

    Thnx Black.....,

I do like that one even though it sits right on top of pillion... still looks like you get enough support. That's what I've been thinking of is making my own pad and using the mounting I have...... Anyone know how to make a pad???

Thnx, Goober, I like that one too...Need to look into it.... Did you make that pad yourself? If so how did you do that?

The backing is 3/4 plywood. Sewed the first cover...but...i can't sew. so i took it to a local uhpolsterer and he made the cover for 20 bucks.

    Goober44,

What about the other materials? What did you use for that? Like foam, leather or vinyl, etc.
How did you attach it to the bar?

    Thnx, Eric

I have the Mapam backrest with luggage rack on my Marauder. My girlfriend says it's very comfortable. The pad probably isn't bigger than yours,... but it is higher. I wouldn't suggest the luggage rack on a Meany though,.. would look a bit funny.

Hey Erdejo, The uhpolstery shop covered it with vynal with 1" foam on the front and 1/4" foam on the back side. On my bike I have a bar running down the center of the back rest frame which I drilled some holes in to attatch the pad to. At your local hardware store you can pick up some bolt inserts (lThey look kinda like heli-coil inserts.). The inserts have a course thread on the outside and regular bolt threads on the inside, there are a few different sizes to chose from. On some other back rests that I have made i welded tabs to the inner edge of the frame (like ears ) and attatched the pad to them. Hope this explained it a little better.

That is why I went to the taller one. I think the tall one looks very good with the mustang and does not sit right on the pillion. The top of the backrest stands 12" tall off the top of the pillion.

I have the mini Cobra back rest but I saw in J & P catalog a tall and pointed back rest that look "mean". I'll look it up and post a link and pic here later.

    Trying a mod myself....

    Hi All,

Thnx for the input so far.
I am actually working on (coming up with) a mod to the sissy bar to try to make it quick release myself..... If that works out I want to see if I can make the baggage rack "quick release" as well. And then finally the wind shield that I have (is not right now....).

Just need to find some time to do it (all kinds of family stuff.. ).
As usual I will keep you posted and post the results if and when done.

    Eric
