Would this be worth fixing up?

First of all, hello everyone! I'm new to the forum, I found this place because after seeing an ad on craigslist for a z1000 that didn't have a front end, I was looking at what swaps were possible. Currently I only own a Ninja 250ex but hope to step things up a bit pretty soon.

So that brings me to my question... would this 2003 z1000 be worth fixing up? The guy on craigslist wants $500 for it. The body is damage free and the motor appears to be intact... the guy is claiming not to have a key or DMV papers, saying he got it "through a lien sale at a storage auction". That kind of scares me and who knows what kind of fees it will have (not to mention getting a key made probably cost $200) and I wont be able to hear the bike turn on before buying it.

It seems like most everyone does a 636 swap on these bikes anyways, so it's not a total loss that the forks are gone.

Hopefully someone could give me some more insight... should I just walk away from this train wreck? Or turn it in to something nice? Thank you very much in advance!

I'd get the VIN first, run it to the sheriff dept and make sure it's not stolen or any lien on it.

If not, I'd go for it at that price. If the frame is straight, you're good to go. Get you a new new Z1000 triple, pretty much a whole 636 front end. Z1000 headlight and parts. I think you can come out with a nicely upgraded Z for less than 2K. If you can find a lot of parts on ebay and used that is.

The title part, as long as there's no lien, you can get a bonded title for a hundred bucks worth of paperwork. Easy peasy. Search for Bonded title on here. I did mine, dont remember the exact steps, but it took about a week.

This same bike is being parted out on z1000forums.com

I may need to ask some questions before money changes hands..

This is what the email says "i got the bike through a lien sale at a storage auction" & "The management where i bought the bike informed me they would furnish the necessary dmv stuff if i wanted to go that route and register the bike." I'm not really sure how the whole lien thing works, that's part of why I'm asking. It sounds like he bought this at an auction for a storage unit that was closed down from someone not paying their rent.

For some reason I can't see the pictures of the bike on the Z1000 forum, but the dude is selling off the parts. So I wouldn't touch this bike. Besides, you can get a Gen1 in good shape for what... $3500 or so.

If he's selling off parts, I wouldn't touch it if I were you. Really have no idea of what could be missing.

I mean I would buy it, since I already have another Z to work with. But without the knowledge of the Z and what parts go where and what parts are compatible and what you need, I wouldn't venture into this territory.

I looked at his z.com ad again, and he did offer it whole or in parts
He hasn't sold an parts yet, but I did make him an offer on several.

He's legit. He sent me several pics of all the parts I wanted.

Look for flaking paint on the frame around the steering head and back at least 12 inches.
