buying a Z, what to look out for?

Ive been looking up z's for the past few months and will hopefully be buying one in the next month or two, are there any specific things to look out for on the z? (any model specific problems)

Ive read about the exhaust headers and stand etc coming loose but these are minor easy fixes. anything bigger that i should look for?

at the moment i'l be looking for a 04/05 Z750 with approx 10,000Kms on the clock. If i come across a good priced z1000 i might get that instead. (Im in australia if its of any help)

    Cheers!
Im looking forwards to getting one and spending more time on these great forums!

The exhaust header/stand issue is nothing. Just from the factory they are not torqued enough. The only other issue I can think of is some, (and I mean very little by this) have had an issue with the frame cracking near the front stem on some 03 models. I have only heard of a few with this problem and there are many 03's out there. I do believe it would of been caused by riding on one wheel (wheelie) and letting the front slam to the ground. I however do have an 03 and my bike is just fine, Other than that 03-06 are the same bike...

As above really, obviously check for crash damage and if you go for the 1000 see if the shock has any life in it if its over 10k miles

Check & tighten all the hose clamps, even the ones under the gas tank.

I have an 03 with a Corbin seat. I really like the seating position but the seat is plenty firm. As far as problems, I don't know of any other than what has been mentioned.

    Good luck.

the last couple times i rode my bike i seam to have a nasty noise coming from the starter. one day it seamed like it back fired when the starter was pressed and jumped a gear in the starter. now when starting it i get this horrible noise like something is out of place and smacking a case or something.

that is the only problem i have ever experienced with my Z1000 03. just check the tires, wheel bearings, break pads, ensure all the lights are in working order and check how clean the bike is. i bought a bike off Ebay sight unsean. but the pictures of it where spotless! and when i got there it was just as clean as the pictures.

Some 03's had starter gear failures and were fixed under warranty.

    hey john or anyone else,
Any more info on the starter gear failures? I bought the bike used and would doubt that there is still a warranty on the bike. Now I need to know what parts I will need and what else I should look for when I get in there.

I helped a friend work on her SV650 that had the same problem. We replaced the starter & starter driven gear.

I've had my Z750 for two years now, around 22000kms, no problems with it at all. Chnged the tires a few times, oil regularly, that's it.

I did get the seat upholdstered with new memory foam, like that matress on TV, and it's a so much nicer. Cost me $45 cdn instead of 300-350 for a Corbin.

Just make sure the bike was not beaten up too much by the previous owner. I bought new, so I didn'tave t worry. I'm sure you could fins a nice leftover real cheap if you look around.

    Good luck.
    Ride safely!!
