Switching to the 180/55 rear from a 190

Anyone do it? Is this a common switch? Good or bad?

I usually switch to 180s in the rear because it improves turn-in, handling, blah, blah, etc.

How does it affect the Z?

I put on a 180 rear tire on my first Z1000 and it felt a lot more nimble and easier to turn. Searching with "180 190" in the search field will pull up a lot of good threads on the topic. Good luck bro!

As a rule of thumb, you can effectively manipulate the suspension heights (front and rear) to give you the same turn in effects.

    Well said that man.

I'm putting a 190 back on when I wear this on off. Plus, the 190 looks so much cooler

A 180 Pilot Power replaced the OEM 190 battleaxe on my '03. I wouldn't dare do this to the OE skin.

so what does the 2 hundy ride like?. anybody evr put one on? like the diff between a 180 and 190?( ie..really only slightly noticeable)
The act of riding is a form of meditation, because the concentration that's required to safely ride a motorcycle tends to focus the mind in a way that eliminates other mental distractions that might interfere with the mission. This creates a single-mindedness that, in effect, displaces the continuous stream of thoughts that normally flow through our consciousness.

    Yup!

I've said this several times... It is my opinion that most of the raving going on the switch to a 180 is all based on going from a worn flat centered 190 to a brand new 180. The diff between a new & worn tires are night & day.

Now are there any differences in turn in from going to a new 180 from a new 190... on a 6 INCH rim? My educated guess would be "NOT night & day, under a controlled test".

There will likely be a greater diff between a 180 in a 5.5 rim & a 190 on a 6.0 rim. But that 6.0 rim has got to change the profile towards the edge of the tire a bit to minimize any (if any) diff in turn in.

Now the 180 is cheaper. That is always nice...

Just saying that doing a comparison of a worn 190 to a new 180 is worth mentioning because even a worn 180 vs a new 180 will yield a night & day diff in feel...

I have lowered the front end of my bike by 11mm & have the rear set up pretty stiff & the bike is very flickable with the 190...

After my OEM Bridgestone's wore out, I tried going with a 180 Diablo on the back. In less than 500 miles I switched back to a 190. Bike felt skittish, wouldn't hold a true line and felt much less stable to me. Was able to sell the tire on e-bay, so I didn't take a bath on it. Stick with the 190's, IMHO...
