Here in the US the licnse plates are provided by the state in which you live. They determine the size and spacing of the numbers and letters plus the colors. Each state has it's own coloring and background schemes.

I believe that there's a big difference between US license plates and UK number plates in terms of what they do.
In the US I believe that you buy a license plate (with a unique vehicle identifier on it) each year and it is dated - this gives you the right to use the vehicle on the highway.
In the UK, the number plate is only a unique vehicle identifier - it serves no other purpose and stays with the vehicle for it's life (ok - some exceptions).
The legal minimum size is about 9x7 inches and as this is big, people often fit slightly smaller ones (8x6, 7x5 etc) on to look better.
We still pay our annual fees, but it's for a small disc (tax disc) that must be attached to the bike - image attached.

Orange 2003 Z1000 sold
ZRX400 little pocket rocket
ZRX1100 torque monster
Got an 8x6 on mine - which is a bit smaller than regular, but since I fitted the R&G tail tidy with the stock indicators, the full size cheese board won't fit between the indicators....
Still looks big in the pics though...

In the US you only get a differnt plate if yours is stolen or you change states. We have to pay for new tags each year, it's placed on the license plate with a month tag, and we have to pay registration fees every year due by the month on the plate. The tags have an identifier that matches the registration for the vehicle because people try to steal tags and put them on vehicles that aren't registered.
