DIY maintenance VOID warranty?
Hello All,
Got A quick ?. Time for my 600 mile service...finally. I am now able to ride daily...no problems w/my old injuries. Anyhow, I need service...I know I should do it myself but, I heard this voids the warranty, anybody know for SURE if DIY maintenance will do so??? I got a few quotes for $250-285 WTF!
for an oil change and some tightening??? My other Z was used when I bought it and did all maintenance but VALVES,...Also, I am considering buying the extended warranty but, if DIY service voids this, FORGET IT!, Need some advice from you high mileage Z1000 brothers.
Thanks
KIMO

I called Kawasaki and asked these questions myself. Nothing can void the Warranty other that racing the bike or using it as a rental. Just keep receipts and a type or write and service record. It is only required that a competent person perform the work.

I've got the same situation... However, I already did 1000 miles (oops). I am not sure if I want to do the service myself because I am not so familiar with all that but the costs for service are horrendous! What do you guys think is the most important I as an unexperienced
can do myself (besides changing oil and filter)? Thanks!
My bike:
* Z1000 titanium (2005) ¤ Laser X-treme ¤ 4300K HID ¤ self "dremeled" bubble windshield ¤ fender eliminator w/ LP V signals (iridium/black) ¤ Airbox mod ¤ LED tacho mod (1 blue LED missing
) ¤ Clear Alternatives tail lights w/indicators ¤ Keiti Black Reaper Tank Pad
¤ CRG LS Hindsight bar end mirrors ¤ Carbon Fiber Silver Z Performance Grips ¤ Rizoma signals front ¤ radiator cover
¤ and much more to come

Go buy the service manual and follow the service schedule. If there's any questions, you'll have the service manual to guide you through any unfamiliar territory.

i was thinking the same thing last week when i changed my oil & filter. mine has 4500 miles on it, i took it in for the first one and it cost me 175.00 bucks.i hate bringing it to the dealership, i use riderforums.com for all my maintenance needs. someone will be glad to help.they all-ways help me... but on the valve thing that might be a horse of a different color. i can just picture "myself" trying to adjust the valves.... but i would like to know what are the symptoms that i will notice when the bike needs a valve adjustment.... or maybe it's just the golden rule you bring the bike in at so many miles.. i don't know...... scott

You may not notice much of anything. Maybe the engine is a little quieter (as I noticed my ZR-7 was a little noisier after I made the adjustments). And being as it's a gradual thing, you may not notice it at all. Over time the valves won't close all the way, performance will be less, there will be excessive cam wear as well as valve damage.
As far as doing the work yourself, the Z1 is a little more complicated than the ZR-7, but if you can read a book and have a basic understanding of how an engine works, then it shouldn't be a problem. I would say to buy the service manual and read up on it. Then if you still don't understand there are plenty of guys here to help you through it or you can still opt to take it to the dealer. But having the service manual is a nice thing to have. That way if something does happen you have all the same info the shops have and can read about a "job" before you get into it and can make a more informed decision.

Don't get me wrong, I encourage riders to do their own work. It helps you learn and understand more about your bike, saves money and then you know what's been done.
