Starter Troubles
Hey guys,
So I posted here a while back about having trouble starting the bike. It is an '09 650r with 1800 miles on it. Basically the bike wouldn't start up right away and would take a second or two to fire up. Fuel injection and starter seemed fine it was just that the bike wouldn't fire for a second or two. I took yall's advice and replaced the battery but it still had troubles even with a battery tender. It always eventually fired up so I was waiting to get the problem fixed.
So I lend the bike to a friend of mine to ride it this past weekend and he calls me to say the bike won't fire up. Even jump starting it wont get it to fire. After dropping it off at the shop they say the motor is fine and that the problem is the starter. They replaced the battery and plugs. He says the starter clutch is making a real bad (clanking) sound and that they can't get good compression with the plugs in. He says there are two possible problems. One, there are two bolts on the starter and he says they may have come loose. Or the second possibility is the starter clutch and starter have gone bad after only 1800 miles (he has trouble believing this is the case). I'm not a real gear head so sorry if this seems like gibberish its just what he said to me. They are tearing down the starter now to see what the problem is. Have yall heard of something like this happening in other '09 650rs? Any advice would be appreciated as they are saying it will be $600 for a new starter and starter clutch with parts alone. Thanks yall.
