Riding through Georgia to the Tail of the Dragon

Hey guys, I'm heading down to Florida next month with the guys for a couple of weeks. My job is to get us from Jacksonville, FL to somewhere near the Tail of the Dragon. Anyone have any advice on riding through those parts? Construction to avoid? Any advice on roads or hotels would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

Are you riding south or north? I see Canada, and then I see from Jacksonville to the dragon.

Anyway, get yourself a copy of Mad Maps for the smokies region.

Do a google maps search from Jacksonville to Robbinsville, NC and say "avoid highways"

Once you get north of interstate 85 the roads get real interesting and you can pick and choose many different roads to ride at that point. That is where the Mad Maps will come in handy.
Skill is what keeps you on two wheels.

Situational awareness combined with skill is what keeps you out of harm's way.

ATGATT combined with Situational Awareness and Skill means you might live to ride another day when that deer runs into your bike or that drunk blows through that stop sign.

We are heading out from Canada one month from today. I'm riding with some friends, going out to the east coast, and then down to Florida. We're staying in Florida for a couple of days, then heading back north. We've split up the route and I'm responsible for getting us from Florida to the Tail of the Dragon.

I'll have to check out Mad Maps, and thanks for the tip. I have already done the Google Maps bit (actually exactly as you've suggested) but I thought those who ride down there might know a few things that Google doesn't.

    Thanks again.

Mad Maps will fill in the best roads to ride north of I-85. I just ride them and didn't pay too much attention to names. They are all good in that area of Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee. If you are wanting to stop and see stuff like waterfalls and gorges, Gold mining towns, etc, that's a different question.

Hotels is a personal preference sort of thing. I prefer to camp when in that neck of the woods, but when it comes to staying in a hotel I like to see my bike outside my window and I expect the place to be clean regardless of the cost.

This would be a nice route, and it keeps you off the superslab. The only modification I might would make is to take I-95 up to I-16, then get off again in Dublin. That shorten up the time a bit, and really wouldn't take away any fun, as the backroads from Jax to Dublin are pretty boring.

As a side note, Helen is a very biker friendly little town in the mountains with great food, all within walking distance of any of the hotels in the town. Would be a great place to stop for the night, and then finish the trip to the Gap when you wake up fresh.

Jacksonville, FL to 17548 Tapoco Rd, Robbinsville, NC 28771 - Google Maps
