    Exclamation Site Courtesy

I was just sent the following message by another forum member on this site:

"You sir...are a big baby that can't handle adult conversations. Get a fresh diaper change..and come back when you can take the freedom of speech permitted in this country by the very first ammendment in the Constitution! Suck it up or leave."

This was shortly after he called me an idiot in a thread. Before that, calling anyone who would purchase a bike off of eBay an idiot. Kind of a petty thing, really. But I thought I would post this just to clarify some things in case there are other ignorant people who believe the above text in bold type.

The freedom of speech does NOT give you the right to verbally assault others and solicit aggravated reactions from them; or otherwise put others under duress. Just like the right to bear arms does not give you the right to shoot people without just cause.

Just in case you were wondering, the person whom I am referring to is "HilBillyKat" and one can only presume that he is okay with having that as his title. That, in my humble opinion, when combined with his words will tell you everything you need to know about this individual. I request that forum moderators take a little look at his posts to see if he has a history of this sort of behavior. If so, I believe it should warrant an immediate removal.

Be nice to others. You have no idea what kind of day they may be having or what they've been through in life.

    Respectfully,
    The Duck

Yes...and for the record I still feel that way. I never called him or anybody else an idiot until after he called himself one. Now h has taken to tattling like a school boy because someone spilled his soda pop at lunch.

    Really ducky? REALLY?

First of all, you don't air out your PM's on the open forum. THAT is Site Courtesy the first. Not that it's against the rules, or your right/privilege to do so; it's just bad form. In case you forgot, the "P" means "private". If you don't like what's said there, go to the mods; don't bring it back out here. Especially in this case, those of us involved could see how the conversation was going and HbK did the right thing by shutting it down and sending the PM. He even let everyone know you were getting a PM because you took it personal- that is good form.

The "id***" comment was completely benign and innocent- let's remove that reference for a moment and review the conversation. HbK's opinion was that one shouldn't buy online sight unseen. You disagreed because you had a good experience. HbK said you were lucky because your experience was the exception to his rule. All HbK did was place emphasis on his opinion by adding the "id***" descriptor. You picked up on it and applied it to yourself with a negative connotation. HbK continued the reference in emphasizing his point. Nobody called anyone a name.

In reference to your bold text, I will borrow your quote… Guess that makes ME ignorant. What about the bold do you not believe or agree with? "or abridging the freedom of speech" is what it says. That means everything is permitted, even if you don't like it, even if it hurts your feelings, even if you take it personal. That is the cost of this freedom. I remember when the right to burn our flag went to the Supreme Court and they ruled it was a constitutional act! I thought, "How in the world is that possible?" But it is and I have to allow for it, even though I don't like it. My option is to "suck it up or leave", watch or change the channel, OR convince my fellow American or forum bud that his opinion is faulty with evidence. That is Site Courtesy the second.

You solicited your own aggravated reaction. At the time of the first "id***" remark post, you had not indicated you had purchased anything online; you had merely provided an alternate online link to the OP. Therefore, the "id***" remark could not have been directed at you, or anyone else, personally. It was a general statement meant to emphasize HbK's opinion. For the record, I don't agree with HbK's opinion, because I have bought and sold vehicles over the internet with success; however, you cannot BE an id*** AND do so because it is very easy to be unsuccessful in that arena. So HbK's opinion has merit, but as he stated, there are exceptions to every rule and opinion, as we see about every 12 seconds on this forum.

Unfortunately, your opinion in this matter is not humble; it is presumptuous and out of bounds. Who are you to presume to moderate this forum based on your own experience with a few posts? Who are you to presume to call out a liked and respected forum member (go read the posts; I have- and the posts of others commenting about HbK) because you misunderstood a single forum post and took it personal? Wisdom says if you are taking something personal on this forum, you are taking it too far and you need to push back (EDIT: push away from your computer) so it doesn't make you or anyone else have a bad day. That is Site Courtesy the third.

Finally, what are we to assume to know about YOU given YOUR title? Don't judge a book by it's cover is what we've all been taught at some point in our lives. It applies here, too. That is Site Courtesy the fourth.

If you were having a bad day and were not in your right mind when all of this went down, then I hope you are doing okay today and can go back and review it all with a fresh set of eyes and a clear head. I have shared some good posts and "likes" with you, so this is not a personal attack. I'm suggesting to you as a forum bud that you're in the wrong in several areas here that need to be corrected.

    Quoted cause I 100% agree!!!

Calling someone an idiot does not qualify as verbal assault.

Freedom of speech *guarantees* that someone, somewhere, is going to be offended or aggravated over something someone else said at some point. There is no such thing as "freedom to not be offended". Heck, I'm offended at your post and think you're so far off base you're not even in the game anymore. But, being that I'm a good American and a Veteran, I'll defend to the death the right for you to say what you said.

Just for the record, the "freedom of speech" provision only applies to the government not censoring things.
The owners of this site......and every other one.......have a perfect right to limit what is said here and how it is said.
I also have that right when you are inside my house or place of business.

But I think that both parties in this "discussion" need to grow up and quit whining.

Exactly...and what I was threatened with involved government prosecution...which applies directly to my constitutional right to free speech. Thank you for your service and your patriotic attitude AJ....unfortunately that's a quality that seems to be less common each day...
