View Full Version : looked a Triumph St
I'm seroiusly thinking about trading in the 7S for a Triumph St. Anyone want to talk me out of it???:D
I'll talk you out of it.
Buy a Speed Triple instead. :D
i like the st because of the luggage and with the heli risers it fits hust like the zr7. the triple is nice though. my wife's client is a triumph dealer and he'll sell the bike to us for slightly over cost. it's 13k otd with all the xtras i can get it for 10k with 4 yr warranty
Actually, the ST 955i is a pretty awesome ride. When it comes to liter-size sport-tourers, the Triumph is the horsepower leader. The Ducs, Hondas, Aprilias, etc-- they are all about ten hp short of the Trumpet. They all seem to have better suspension systems than the Brit bike, though. For all but the most spirited riding, however, I'm sure the ST's legs would be fine.
$10,000 out the door isn't a bad price. Is this a 2002 model, or a left-over 2001? You could probably walk away with an '01 for about 8K if you look around. I know I could point you to a few specific dealers.
it's a 02 with hard luggage (3 piece), zero gravity shield, heli riser, and carbon fiber can all with 4 yr warranty. i'd say that is the best price anyone will find otd
Talk you out of buying a Triumph? Heeeelll nah! I'm partial to the Sprint RS myself. Used to be the Speed Triple, but I sat on one and it wasn't as comfortable as I'd thought. Still looks super bad-*** though.
10K for a brand new bike with hard luggage is not a bad deal at all.
Emrah
This is just my humble opinion...
If you want a comfortable bike that's great for touring, comfortable and powerful, with lots of luggage space, why not move past the Sprint and check out the Trophy 1200? It's a larger bike, but it handles well for its size and it's even faster than the ST. If you plan on riding around with all that luggage on the back anyway, handling probably isn't going to be your primary concern with the bike. Some people can't stand the looks of the Trophy; I think it's the best looking tourer out there.
The Sprint ST retails for $10,799. I have no idea how much the luggage set or extended warranty costs, but I know that the carbon can is about $375. 10K is probably good, but I'm not sure that the dealer is being honest, saying that it's just over his cost. My '02 Daytona retailed for $10,999, and I got it for 9K out the door with just the optional seat cowl. I almost bought the can, too, but I figured I would buy an aftermarket system later on, when some good ones are available. I will also be looking into some Tuneboy ECM uploads after the bike has been broken in.
Have you ridden one yet? If you aren't totally serious about buying the bike, then don't test ride it. Because if you do, the awesome triple sound will totally suck you in, and you'll be left with no other choice but to take the bike home. :)
boxsky,
Couldn't possibly talk you out of it. I've ridden the ST (and the RS and the Trophy). The ST may be slightly more comfy than a VFR and definitely has the torque factor over the VFR. I was really sorry I had to take it back to the dealer and had considered buying a used one. :mecry: :mecry: If my ZR-7 gets stolen or wrecked this bike will probably replace it.
Triple when you say oyd for $9k you're including taxes, tags, freight, etc...
The luggage alone cost a grand. heli bars are 300 and the can is 400 also the warranty is 400. when i say cost am talking them making close to a grand. they are in business [lus all the other triumph dealers in this area won't move
the trophy is ugly plus it doesn't come close to the power of the st. the st is the same as the rs except for a few lbs and the xtra fairing.

I would wait. I read in a local mag that Triumph Italy, who first produced the Speed4 ( stripped down TT600 ) have taken to a Sprint RS and called it the SprintRS.S . It's basically an FZ-1 eater. Like the Speed4 it will make general production.
They have stuck back the single-sided swingarm from earlier Daytonas, a high rise carbon can and put a mini-bikini fairing on it. It's the bollocks. I would get a pic of it but I can't understand a fr**kin word on the site :D
:)
>Triple when you say otd for $9k you're including taxes, tags, freight, etc...
Yep, that's what I mean. But then again, I have secret sources. ;) That's what you get when you've been searching the country for a Daytona for almost a year. The only cost outside of that $9000 was the shipping cost to get the bike to me, since the dealer is 1200 miles south of me. That was an extra $550. I could have avoided that if I just wanted to make the drive to pick it up (or fly down and ride it back), but I figured that I was getting such a deal anyway that another $550 wasn't so bad.
>trophy is ugly plus it doesn't come close to the power of the st
Actually, the Trophy 1200 has as much horsepower and more torque than either Sprint. It also boasts greater straight-line acceleration. The Trophy is best categorized with bikes like the ZZR-1200 and FJR1300, except the Triumph was dominating the power-touring class way before these two showed up to knock it off its pedestal.
But, as for the ugly part, I guess that's enough reason not to get one. Like I said before, it seems like it's a love-it or hate-it type deal with the Trophy.
>the st is the same as the rs except for a few lbs and the xtra fairing
I wish I still had my brochures handy, so I could look up the actual specs. There's a pretty significant difference in weight between the two Sprints, some 30+ pounds, I'm pretty sure. The RS also boasts a stiffer twin-sided swingarm to the ST's single-sided unit. I'm not sure if they share equal power-output for 2002 or not, I haven't read up on that yet. If it were me, I would be going your route and getting an ST over the RS, though. It's almost everything the RS is, just with a lot more included in the package. I'm not even sure why Triumph needs a model like the RS-- it's like some strange half-breed between a Daytona and a Speed Triple, except minus their level of performance. At least the ST makes sense.
What kind of riding are you planning on doing? The reason I ask is that I am sure there are lots of leftover '01 Sprints available, that you could get with all the same accessories, and pay even less. On the street, I really don't know if you will be able to see a real difference between 108 hp and 119hp, especially if you are all loaded up with luggage. It's an idea, anyway. I had dealers throwing leftover '01 Daytonas at me for less than $8000, just to get them out of their showrooms.
Trophy 107hp @9k and 77lb @ 6.5k
St 108hp @9.2k and 72lb @ 6.2k
Trophy weights 62lbs more every mag i have read shows the st clearly wins the stright line tests.
But anyway you're right if i don't like it it'll never will be any consideration. Riding will be myself only (wife has her own bike) on some long distance riding, need luggage for those types of trips otherwise 100 to 150 miles of twist, turns, traffic, freeway. Basically all types. I like the St for the sheer reason of looks, fit to myself with the risers it fits just like the ZR7S, I called the dealer yesterday. If i take the demo on the show room with 47 miles on it i can walk out the door with it for .... 9150.00 that's with everything i said before plus a tank bag and alarm.
Now i just have to talk my wife in allowing me to do it.:mecry:

I'm a firm believer that if you're gonna spend the money, don't cheat yourself and buy something as a compromise to what you really want. All the numbers and stats don't mean a thing if you are happy riding it. We've all seen bike comparisons that are put together by bike mag editors that have nothing to do all day but compare bikes, and then add a twist by comparing how they feel about that bike and the ones that they really like (and may not have anything to do with the test).
$0.02
Titomike, do you mean this one?
Sorry to disappoint you, but this bike won't go production line before two years.
boxsky, are you sure those power figures you've posted are for the Trophy 1200, and not the Trophy 900? I could have sworn the 1200 had torque in the 85-90 ft/lb range. Oh, well, maybe you're right, it's been a while since I was looking into these things.
And hey, man, for $9150, you had better buy that thing. I'm usually one to slowly back away from any demo units, but with only 47 miles and a complete extended warranty, I would be all over that deal. Buy it!!! Bring it home before you ask your wife for approval-- that way if she gets pissed and kicks you out for a few days, at least you'll have plenty of time to break the bike in. :D
>All the numbers and stats don't mean a thing if you are happy riding it
Damn right. Magazine specs are pretty much just for your ego, I think. By the books, my Daytona will get walked all over by the Japanese four-cylinder offerings. On the street, though? Probably nary a difference. It's all about how they perform in the real world, on the street, and how you fit on them and work with them. If you and the bike just fit like you were meant for each other, and if you can spend just as much time looking at your bike at a standstill in the driveway as you can riding it, then you've found your road-mate. Buy what you like, not what the reviews tell you is best. This is what I've learned in my liter-bike quest, anyway.
Hi boxsky, I talked with my dealer today and he said that he has a red 2001 Sprint ST new in the crate that he would sell you for $7800 out the door. That does not include any of the accessories, though, so that might not be the better deal. I thought I'd let you know, though.
If you want to contact them, their phone number is (800)316-4348. You'll want to ask for Allen Danner. Also, his E-mail address is allendanner@email.msn.com. I'm pretty sure they can ship anywhere in the United States.
