First trackday on my new '12 N1K

A bit last minute, did my 500 mi oil change Sat and then said screw it, loaded her in the truck and this morning hit summit point. Did 5 sessions and it was toasty. Bike handled great, never got arm pump or hand fatigue, good power, good brakes. Tweaks - I was dragging my toes several times, never had this prob before, next time I'll have a coach follow my and see what I'm doing, but I think something about the ergos or peg placement has me rotating my toes out or hanging too low or something, I actually had to start thinking about it. Gotta get used to the lower redline than my past bikes, but started to feel good about it quickly. Overall, I'm thrilled. Amazing a bike can be so comfortable cruising you could fall asleep on it and go run a trackday with no disappointments. Had a lot of interest in it too, lots of guys asking how I liked it etc. bike didn't feel loose, but man did I put a beating on the tires, ran at 34/34 hot. It's a wheelie machine, but we know that already, I thought I might get yelled at, too much fun lifting the front a bit in strategic places. Sorry no vid, it was spur of the moment and I dont have a mount for this bike yet. Next time. Happy happy, joy joy.

    Dave.

Dman! I was at Summit with you. I was the guy on the green ZX6 that came up to you during your tech check over.

Glad you had a good time. I really wish I took mine now. How was it coming out of the turns? Any wheel slippage? And were you dancing through the gears or staying in 1 or 2?

Sorry for all the questions. As much as I want to take it to the track, I'm worried about the torque coming out of the turns. Plus the stock tires are not my friend. I've had some issues on the street with them.

Hey gogo - great day right!

The tires are a weak spot but I see myself yanking them at the end of summer. They aren't terrible, but from what I'm used, I had to be careful like you say on exits, I had them chewed and melted edge to edge, I'll post a pic or two today, but with only 500 mis of seat time on the bike it didn't bother til like the last session as I settled in on it and getting used to its different feel from my R1. I managed my expectations, I thought I'd be a little disappointed with it, but not at all. I think it's a good set of tires and steel braided brake lines away from being darn near the ideal compromise. It's not as rail like thru corners as the R1, but that's not fair to compare, and I didn't mess with the suspension at all, and I need to.

Gears were 2 and 3. I only settled into 1st when catching that slow traffic in those tight second set of corners, but after that 1st session that was silly slow I was aggressive enough on safe passing or singing thru the pits to get gaps for keeping nice pace going. I tried to catch top speed a couple times when I thought about it, I saw 100 something on the back stretch but hard to see it with un and checking that flag station and braking area. Entering that straight going into 3rd was a nice floater, if hit 11,500 right as the track drops and float the front, also around the bridge with fast hitch turn, I'd come off full throttle 3rd gear to set, roll over into it, straight up and roll on and float the front down hill toward the carousel turn. It's a very fun bike.

Throttle is toughest thing, it does feel choppy by comparison, but I need to see if it's me needing to jut get used to it or if there's something to play with their.

You need to bring yours out and we can represent the N1K! LoL. I know one thing, I was the most comfortable rider out there. And was it me or did the sessions feel really short? It's better than too long, but seemed very quick, but got a lot of them in, great day.

Search for fuel cut eliminator, it might be caused by not having it. :p

Hey Dman, there's a rearset for the N1K on ebay, maybe an option for your toe dragging issue...

Thnx, good point, but I have it, I have all of Ivan's goodies. It may be just compared to prev liter sport bikes I'm used to, I need to see if as I get seat time the choppy feel goes away.

I just signed up for July 15th track day at Summit. I bought my N1K back in March and turned 4000 miles this weekend. Replaced the original tires with a set of Dunlop Q2s, but at the rate I'm going, I'll need another set before track day...

This will be my first time there. I'm planning to go spectate at the CCS races this coming weekend. Any advice for a Summit noob? I'll be starting in the beginner group. Will they move you up a notch if you can show you're worthy?

I'm hoping to go then too. I wait til the week of so I can check the forecast for rain, but if I do, would be happy to hook up.

Don't worry about B class, it's easy to negotiate it, you can pass slower peeps easy there, the coaches are pretty liberal about passing when you are obviously safe and a good rider. Do you have gear? Need a good un scratched helmet, good, gloves amd over ankle boots, they're lenient on gauntlets and shin boots. Cooler with fluids and take shade. LoL

Unless you are crazy talented, I've never heard of anyone getting a bump on their first trackday.

Yea, I was talking to a guy a few months back and he was like, oh yea I went on a trackday at summit, it was my 1st ever and so they made me start in B, but then they moved me to I, then to A - all in the same day. I let him enjoy that, but maybe a .001% chance that story is real, if that. It's not just about how well you ride, they want you to be comfortable with the track situation & that comes with time, also watching the flag stations, so many people take forever to get that, and of course to demonstrate you've got the line seriously down. There are some serious slow peeps out there, like crazy dangerously slow, but slow peeps in intermediate too, it's not about speed it's about knowing what you're doing in the whole track exp. I know in the cars they tell you right up front, no one moves in a class in their first couple times out & it takes two coaches to recommend you in the same day, so within 4 sessions you 2 guys to make the recommendation, to move up in class. There's nothing wrong with B, slow riders are no issue if you setup for them, pass in the zones, which is any place that's not a corner, and go. The most fun you'll have with clothes on, trust me.

I have all the gear except a suit - which should be shipping this week. So I'll have everything before the 15th. I attended levels 1 and 2 of California Superbike School at VIR back in May, but didn't ride my bike then. They said all the BYOB slots were filled, so I was "forced" to ride one of their BMW S1000RRs. Hoping to complete levels 3 and 4 in August. The emphasis there was on the school and practicing the techniques they were teaching. But still, I was surprised at how many slow guys there were even late into the second day. So I'm fine with the B group at Summit, even if it I don't get a bump. I was mostly just curious whether it's even possible to move up.

I've got my shade ready. Looking forward to it.

Awesome, what suit did you go with?

I'll let you know when I decide if I'm going. BTW, the Shenny circuit is my favorate for car or bike, it's about 23 turns in 2.2 mis, if you like carving, you'll love the track, not a high speed track but full of action.

I found a close-out deal on an Alpinestars CR one-piece for $442. I should have a back protector arriving this week, too, so I'll be as protected as we were at VIR. I like the turns. By the middle of the second day at VIR my coach said I was hitting 130 or so on the long straight, but top speed doesn't thrill me as much as the curves do. I'm looking forward to wearing out my tires...
