Unused connectors in harness in left fairing - anyone know what they are for?

This is a discussion on Unused connectors in harness in left fairing - anyone know what they are for? within the 3rd Gen Z1000/Z1000SX/Ninja 1000 forums, part of the Kawasaki Z1000, Ninja 1000, Z750 & Z-750S category; I noticed a couple of connectors sticking out of the harness bundle that goes across the left front fairing and up into the headlight area ...

    Unused connectors in harness in left fairing - anyone know what they are for?

    I noticed a couple of connectors sticking out of the harness bundle that goes across the left front fairing and up into the headlight area when removing the fairing to find a path to run power for my GPS. Does anyone know what these are for? I am going to put a meter on them and see if they are 12v switched power leads, and if so, use them for my GPS. But it would be nice to know what these are actually designed for and if there is a fuse for it somewhere. I can snap a picture if someone needs a better idea of what I am talking about. This is on the Ninja 1000, BTW...

    They're accessory connectors. Most use them for connecting gps, radar detector, etc.

    there is also a set under teh right rear seat but you need to take the rear fairing off to access it.

    Well the multi-meter confirms that this is a switched 12v source as you guys pointed out... but is it fused? The GPS requires a 2A fuse and I would rather just replace the factory fuse with a 2A. Adding another fuse to the line can be done, but it goes against everything I was taught in school...

    I think those leads were designed to be used for the optional heated grips, but it looks like others have used them for other accessories.

    Front connectors are there for the optional heated grips, rear connectors are for lights on the optional side hard cases - or whatever the proper term is...

    I'm running my gps off it but I didn't bother to decrease the fuse size. I'll probably get hit by a bus now.

    is one a ground lead? ill probably use the front one for the relay turn-on lead.

    I cracked open the Service Manual and checked out the electrical schematic on pg 16-16. I believe it's the wire pair labeled "Accessory Connectors 1" and the colors should be BK/Y and W/BL. I can't tell for sure from your photo and I'm too lazy to pull off the fairing off of my bike. This pair runs through Fuse Box 1 and the circuit is protected by a 2A fuse.

    If that's the correct wire pair, it looks like you're all set.

    Yeah, if you chose the option for having the OEM Kawasaki heated grips that were offered as an option that's where they would be connected, it's also a great point to connect a relay for switched accessories circuit.

    why would a gps need the fuse? (pardon my ignorance) I'm about to connect the gps to my powerlet setup which has a 15amp fuse i believe. i have a garmin 60csx with 4pin connector. thx

    The original power cable came with an inline 2A fuse... but I left that cable on the Z1000 when I traded it in. So I made a new cable - I modified the OEM cable, so I had to buy connectors and duplicate the modded cable I left on the other bike. But my new cable did not have the fuse holder that the OEM one came with from the factory. So I either had to get an inline fuse holder and connect the cable directly to the battery, or find an unused accessory connection and change the fuse in the circuit to 2A. In this case the fuse is already 2A, so all I had to do was connect to the existing power source. As far as why you need a fuse... if the electrical system gets shorted, it can pull a lot of current through the wiring harness - enough to burn through the copper wiring. That much current generally will destroy most electronic components. The fuse acts as the weakest link, and will burn through first and break the circuit which should protect anything connected behind it. The fuses are obviously rated for how much current they will take before blowing. If you connect a device rated for 2A of current to a circuit protected by a 15A fuse, then you risk dumping 7 times the rated current into the device should the system get shorted. So your fuse won't blow until you have already destroyed your device. Changing the fuse to the correct value should save your device if a problem should arise. That make sense?

    I am connecting up a electrified tank bag to the accessory connectors in the left side fairing.
    Is the Yellow-Black lead the ground (neagtive)?
    I have looked at the wiring diagram... not sure of the symbology.
